How do I make this sound?

Post by Omal » Sat Aug 10, 2013 6:03 pm

I apologize if this is in the wrong category, but I would love if someone would tell me how to make this synth.

The synth that is playing for the first 7 seconds of the song. Any idea of a VST that can make this kind of sound, or how to make this sound in Massive? I know it's not exactly dubstep, but I'm very interested in making this synth.
Thanks in advance! :)

saws, lots of resonance, and they're automating the lowpass filter cutoff (up).

maybe some portamento. and I think I hear some delay too.

Thanks! What do you mean by "automating the lowpass filter cutoff", applying it to a macro or an envelope or something? (Sorry I'm not used to all the technical terms)

you could certainly do either of those. I just meant that they used a lowpass filter (assuming you know what that is?). and then, over the 7 seconds you're talking about, they automated (changed) the filter cutoff point up from a lower value to a higher value.

which DAW are you using? in ableton, you just open the automation section, pick "cutoff filter" (or whatever it's called depending on the synth you're using), and then make break points. raise the cutoff from maybe like 500 hz to as high as you can go over a set period of time (in this case, 7 seconds) or something like that. can't be sure of the exact numbers in this song.

Oh okay. Can you recommend good wavetables, inserts, or FX for this sound? I'm really lost on it. :/ Thanks again.

It's a little hard to here the exact waves that where used because of the distortion but I think this will get you close. Square wave into a LPF with medium resonance into some distortion. It's sounds like there is some vibrato and it wouldn't surprise me if there was a tiny bit of a envelope on the filter giving it a little more attack. I would go for 0 on the attack and a sort decay time with no sustain on the envelope.

A square wave might sound a bit bland so you could mix in a little of another square wave slightly detuned, like 1-4 cent. If you are still not getting the crunch you want out of it I would mix in a saw wave.

Then like people said before just automate the cutoff.

Figured out something pretty close. Thanks guys. For anyone who is curious:
OSC 1(0.00): Sq-Saw 1 all the way on square
OSC 2(0.04): Sq-Saw 2 all the way on square
OSC 3(-0.04): Sync-Saw about 11:00 on the wt pos and 12:00 on the intensity
2 unisono voices, monophonic legato
lowpass filter: cutoff all the way up, resonance at 12:00
portamento(equal): 10:00(most important thing in the sound that we all weren't thinking of)
modulation on osc 2, phase on osc 2 all the way up
tele tube: dry/wet 1:00, drive all the way up
dimension expander or reverb to add a little more volume
vibrato at 10:00

Thanks again guys, I got the weird techno sound I wanted. c:

sign of the times when someone drops some details about synthesis without naming the synth.

D'you reckon they named it massive because they knew how big it would get? :6:

Ha it nice to see I was so close without even opening my DAW.
The portamento you mentioned is interesting. Are you playing the arp at the same speed and tempo? because that seems way too high.
