Blawan // Randomer // Tessela

Post by Sarah808 » Sun Oct 14, 2012 11:50 am

Right, can we get another conversation rolling on how these guys do the drum and percussion elements in their songs?
There's been speculation before of abletons 'warp' feature being used.. pitch envelopes and layering.
Blawan for example, his 'Tuesday March' tune. The shuffle that starts at 0:30, doesn't sound like simple audio sequencing, there must be a trick or some form of witchcraft going on. Or at 0:44 in this, the real deep dark hit, what's going on here?
Rohan Randomer is another man that captures this type of 'live' feel in his drum elements, real thrashy, home recording sounds with something serious going on in them making them sound thick.
Tessela's D Jane is also a user of this hollowed out metallic sound.
Anyone shed some light?

layering
weird use of timestretching and pitch envelopes
not squeezing the life out of percussion with compressors
more layering

Everyone says this but never gives real life examples or gets anywhere close to any of the producers mentioned to be fair.

I dunnow hat you mean by thick, like in that randomer tune, just sounds like he has recorded some pans and used them lol. just fucking record things and use it as percussion, pitch em down, and layer it witht he original or summat, i dunno, fucking distort this shit out of it or summat

Yup I suppose you're right. Have got mad sounds out of my zoom before. Just wish I knew what type processing they do to make their hits so full and solid sounding, maybe my layering technique is just bad.

No witchcraft, just drum processing that's raw as a snickas bar.

Also reverb.

Sounds like some EQing and Reverb...maybe some stereo spread and that's it.

Just some straight up RAW samples he recorded or sampled from an old movie/track(talking about the Randomer song)

everyone says how easy it is to make similar sounds but noone has given an example of their own tracks that do it justice.

to anyone interested (most of you i assume), here is the raw audio that i used in the track i just posted. the only additional sounds added were a (very) lowpassed kick drum and a bassline from Analog (ableton live synth). the rest of it is extreme processing etc

Short reverbs make things sound quiet metallic too. But like really short.

Yeah I don't mean to say it's easy, it's just that I don't think the techniques are that complicated.

And as Wolf said, for Karenn stuff you need a black robe and one or two Tempest drum boxes.

BOOM! Bump

I think the thing that sets him apart now may be whatever he's doing with his stereo image.
The kick in this is really wide sounding.

The transient doesn't seem huge on the hits but they stull thump hard!! whatzefack

He's a legend.
