Break's production style

yeah i know not dubstop but drum n bass

but anyway, im not a big fan of drum n bass or jungle and i dont claim to know shit but i've heard some songs by break on the radio and love his very organic style. is it just as simple as being very musical, using more samples than synthesizers and playing actual instruments or is there something deeper to it? anyone have some inside knowledge on him?

Sample choice is obviously a big part of it. In terms of the production itself, the main thing for me about break tracks is always the drums: they generally sound like live samples, sometimes they sound live. There's velocity variation, and he leaves a lot of room (for DnB) in his drum lines. The drums sound very lightly compressed to my amateur ears. The other main thing for me is that his tracks seem to originate from the "same room" which generally means everything's been run through the same reverb insert - I know a lot of electronic producers deliberately avoid this effect, so that probably helps with the organic sound.

All of the above is geusswork really, but if I were to try for a Break sounding track, those are the ideas I'd start with. I have no inside knowledge, and I'm no genius musician/producer, so take with a pinch of salt.
