Im confused

Post by digital sequence » Sat Aug 24, 2013 2:55 am

Hey guess, if you remember me than you know i am very much a beginer, so help me out? Im wanting to make dubstep and preform live, but after figurin things out, things were not figured out.... I know you use a daw to create your music, and im looking for daws, debating between ableton or logic, but after i create my songs, im lost.... I've been lookin at traktor s4, which is a remix deck, how can I use this to benifit this journey? I mean i know i make my own songs but wouldn't a remix deck just use other songs others have made? An last but least important, how can I use maschine to make my set fun to play live.... I guess my point is, how do all of these intermix?

Traktor S4 for is for DJ'ing and remixing live.

Not commonly used as a production tool, I wouldn't look to do that if you are still getting to grips with everything.

Starting with a just a DAW, the native VSTs and a decent pair of headphones is a great way to start IMO. Maybe a 3rd party soft synth, but just one and learn it well.

Concentrate on your tunes, get them to a level your happy with and your getting good feedback on. Then work on your live aspect.
I would say learn to DJ (with cdjs/turntables) before thinking of a live show. Most dubstep "live" shows are pretty uninteresting imo. But if you do wanna go down the live route, ableton is your best bet. And then do lots of research/reading. Find out what makes successful live shows good and take influence from them. Experiment

If you're looking at Ableton anyway, it's basically a program for performing live which also has production stuff. But obviously traktor is going to integrate with maschine better.

Remember that if you want to make music like the PROS, you need the HAM VST plugin.

If you want to simply make songs and then DJ (just mixing one track into another) then you can start with Logic X if that's what you're after (I use Logic 9 and love it)

If you are interested in making songs and then later on performing them with a little more intricacy than simply mixing 2 songs (remixing, looping etc) then ableton may be the better option. (I've not used it's live capabilities but always hear everyone raving about it so makes sense to get a tool which can do both.)

Decide which of those 2 you want and then demo both pieces of software to see what works best for you :W:

If you're just a beginner... I think playing live probably isn't something for the near future. It really requires some knowledge and good tunes.
But you can start to think in a liveset kind of way from the beginning... And the only way to do this is to start producing in Ableton's session view.
Session view is weird and will require some hard work before you'll get the hang of it! (try to combine it with arrangement view) But it really is the only way to bring your music live (at this point). of course there are other ways... But this involves hardware and still is hard without ableton (if you do it on your own.)

So yeah, I really recommend ableton! Logic is a good tool, but lacks everything on the live performance front!
