i've just sent 2 of my latest tracks to henry from dubstudio. they get mastered & cut on 10" acetate.
Never cut an acetate till now, always preferred vinyl dubs because of the lifetime, so i'm pretty exited about them.

If the sound like people say, they must be freaking amazing ;-)

Why's that? iirc was hydraulics a stem master
yeah...

lol.

its just excessive I think. if the premaster is mixed properly you shouldnt need stem mastering tbh
I always thought 'stem mastering' was just another term for a mixdown anyway?

iv ordered 10" and 12" vinyl dubs from both. the ed's dubs are ok for a budget ting but ill definitely pay the extra £6 or whatever in the future. the dubstudio plates are a tad heavier and the mastering's slightly punchier. you get cardboard sleeve with the dubstudio dubs too 8)

if you tick the urgent box at dubstudio how quickly do your dubs get booked in?
is there any disadvantage in not ticking the urgent box at dubstudio?

i've never had any urgent dubs situations so ive never ticked it but it takes ages before the booked in session comes round.

probably tbh but idk. if it's a small price for a couple days turnover that'd be gd.

really just wondering if there's any downside and if it's worth it

You don't have to pay more if you tick 'urgent' at Dub Studio. As far as I know it's just a good-will thing from Henry.

If you've got a gig that weekend and you need the dubs ASAP, tick 'urgent'. If you're just cutting for the future then be considerate for other customers and the cutter, and don't tick 'urgent'.

Henry's never failed to get me dubs at very short notice, e.g a day or two before a slew of gigs. Just don't take the piss.

(I say "don't take the piss" - I feel like I'm kind of taking the piss...I paid for a load of dubs a month or two ago and still haven't sent the files in to be cut  )

In my opinion acetate has a lot more impact in the mid-high and high frequencies, proper in-your-face CLARITY unlike anything I've heard from a vinyl dub. But they very quickly develop their own acetate surface noise and the run-in grooves are always very crackly. They always go kkkkkkkkkrrrrrrrrrrrrrrshhhhhhhhhhhppppppppp.....*crackle*....*music* at the beginning

If I was a drum and bass DJ I'd probably cut 100% acetate because the highs are so clear and punchy. For dubstep though, I think the extra durability (for bare rewindz, get me) is worth a slight decrease in sound quality.

Acetate smell is the main reason I'd buy them over vinyl dubs to be honest. They smell crazy. It's a whole new dimension of music.

I still need to try your lathe, Taiken. Hope Switzerland is good. Safe :Q:
