Don't think it works the same with every label. For example Rough Trade always had contracts where after they paid for the cost of making the releases the arists and label shared profit equally.

Except they were still shafting bands out of equal share. (

Yeah I got know idea how it ended up. Just used it as an example of the fact that all contracts aren't what the article said

I know, Factory Records was another iconic example where they split the profits 50/50 between artist and label, only they pumped them profits into the Hacienda.
