Squelch bass synth common in techno

Post by Sheds » Sun Sep 01, 2013 11:08 pm

I need help making a squelching type mid range synth/bass

it's not completely dubstep but i've heard a few tunes use them before
more a uk techno kinda thing

examples:

Blawan - Getting me down (at 00:32)

eleven8 - Unify (at 00:42 on the snare hits and stuff)

if someone could help posting some tutorials or sending some patches then i would be most appreciative!

First off those are completely different sounds, the first one I really don't know what to classify it as (probably the producers just fucked around in their DAW of choice until they got a cool sound).

As for the second sound, it seems to be a distorted pad of some sort.

I remade it with some very dissonant saw/triangle waves and some waveshapers and reverb.

Big ole edit:

I misunderstood which sound you were looking for, that sound seems to be some sort of FM generated noise.

I made a recreation of it as well.

It seems to just be triangle/saw modulated by a formant and another triangle/saw, the volume of all three operators is controlled by almost the same envelopes. a quick decaying hit.

I will let you figure out the freq ratios.

I then highpassed it and soft clipped it slighty.

All in all it is pretty much just a growl that has been highpassed, but in some of those examples it seems lowpassed and maybe bandpassed as well/instead of highpassing.
