48 HOUR DSF COMP REVIEW!!

Post by Devilsindub » Fri Sep 06, 2013 6:24 pm

First off, I'd like to say what an honor it has been to be in this competition with so many talented producers. Each and every producer that competed in the 48 hour DSF comp has my most utmost respect. Congrats on all of your creations! :D

This thread is a review of all the tracks that entered the 48 hour competition. I am not an expert at reviews but I will try to give my best personal and professional opinion on all of your tracks.

Review will go as follows:

Pros: what I personally liked about your track in terms of structure, sound design, and creativity.

There isn't a cons list but I will be giving my personal constructive criticisms on tracks that I felt needed work.

Note that the fact this was a 48 hour competition is taken into consideration, and I understand that some of the tracks weren't complete due to time constraints.

Feedback by all producers on each track is encouraged. With that being said, here are the rules.

Rules:

Producers are allowed to give constructive criticism and are highly encouraged to give positive feedback as well.
Trolling is 100% unacceptable! This thread was created to help producers gain more confidence and also help understand what areas need to be strengthened.

Disclaimer:
As I said before, I am not an expert. My review of the tracks are purely personal opinions and may not apply in some cases. All reviews are open for interpretation.
In terms of some comments about incompletion, they may not apply to you if you simply ran out of time.

REVIEW:

Betancur:

Soundcloud

Pros- I felt that the intro was very creative and strong. I absolutely loved the detuned piano. The build from start to finish was really strong and unique. The muted metal sounding snare was an excellent choice! Solid track overall!

Personal suggestions- the reverb (couldn't tell exactly where it was coming from) was a tad bit heavy and caused a slight conflict with the notes in your main chord progression. Try to lighten it up a bit. Some of the random ambience was some what out of place during the bridge. The hi hat was slightly dominant in your mix. Listen back to it and see what you think.

Great Job!! It was an amazing track! :D

PINOT:

Soundcloud

Pros- I loved the dark and ambient intro, it flowed very nicely. I felt that the build was excellent and the kick cut off automation was a great touch. Very creative and well thought out bass line and creative ambience throughout the entire track. The pluck synth release automations were absolutely amazing! I loved the chord progression change towards the end.

Personal suggestions- the clap was a little abrasive during the softer part of the intro build. You might want to try to automate the volume a bit to go with the natural progression of the build. Around 3.25 there is a pad that comes in that somewhat conflicts with the root notes of the main chord progression.

Excellent track overall! Amazing job! :4:

CANCELLARA:

Soundcloud

Pros- Beautiful dark ambience! I felt the mix was excellent and the build around 2.37 was extremely unique and absolutely amazing.

Personal suggestions- the track didn't have a solid ending (read disclaimer).

You have something special there! It is a really solid track! Finish it and I think you'll have a track that you can enjoy for the rest of your life. Great job man! :4:

MAJKA:

Soundcloud

Pros- I felt that the sub bass was truly superior. Your mix was really clean and had a lot of perspective. I'm not sure but it sounded like a guitar came in on some of the parts? Whether it be a guitar or a distorted synth of some kind, it was awesome! I loved the pad synths chord progression.

Personal suggestions- The cymbals by themselves were a bit abrasive. Try cutting some frequencies and turning them down a bit. Maybe try using a softer kick in the softer portions of the song. It seems slightly incomplete.

Awesome track overall! Kudos! :D

BOASSON-HAGEN:

Soundcloud

Pros- Absolutely ASTOUNDING sound design! I can tell you put a lot of effort in making sure your growls had the right amount of phasing and movement. The D&B style drum beat was excellent. Your sidechaining was really clean, which made your kick and snare stand out the way they should. The tempo automations were pretty cool. I loved the choir that evolves into the track towards the end. Not to be repetitive but, AMAZING SOUND DESIGN!! You're very gifted where that's concerned.

Personal suggestions- Growls during the intro are a bit loud and kind of threw me off guard. The beat in the half time drop needs work in terms of timing. There were some out of sync hits in there. I think it needs a solid ending.

Amazing job my friend!! Congrats! :4:

NIBALI:

Soundcloud

Pros- Great mix! The tape stop in the intro was a nice touch. The pitched vocal sample was really cool. Excellent beat, very creative in terms of percussion. Love the subtle stops that you added in some parts. Very well structured. Amazing chord progression and a solid ending.

No personal suggestions

Great Job!! :Q:

MOLLEMA:

Soundcloud

Pros- Very cool vocal sample. Very relaxing track, I would listen to this when I'm pissed off. It would probably chill me out. Extremely clean mix. Absolutely love the random percussions. Great lead during 3.40. Sidechained soft synth automation is very cool. As a whole this song is very well executed and complete.

No personal suggestions

Awesome track!! Amazing job! :Q:

ROCHE:

Soundcloud

pros- Interesting chip sequence. The ideas that went into this track were really cool. Awesome beat!

Personal suggestions- Needs slight timing adjustments. the 2nd chip synth has some conflicting notes. Towards the middle it sounded like the track kind of fell apart. There was no ending or body(read disclaimer). Needs a bit of work but I think it has potential.

Good job!! :D

KNEES:

Soundcloud

Pros- Excellent intro. Very clean mix. Some really sick vocal samples. Very good beat and super thick sub. I absolutely loved the pitch automations on the vocal sample. Very good in terms of creativity. Really cool fall off during 3.40. The half time beat has a really good flow. Loved the sidechained texture in the background. Great track overall!

Personal suggestion- Cymbal hits are a tad bit high in the mix.

Amazing job man congrats!! :4:

TXURRUKA:

Soundcloud

Pros- Awesome intro! The siren synth was a nice touch. Great application of ambience. Pad chord progression towards the end is absolutely OUTSTANDING!

Personal suggestions- 808 kick in the intro is a little strong. You might want to consider lowering it. Maybe it's because of the time constraints. Needs a little more for the ending.

Great job!! Very creative and unique track! :Q:

PIEDRA:

Soundcloud

Pros- Very cool clock sound in the intro. The vocal melody is really strong. Love the chord release automation and progression. Is complete in terms of structure. Excellent well rounded song!

Personal suggestion- The soft break around 3.04 is a little long. You might want to consider trimming it down a little.

Excellent job!! Love the song! :Q:

Once again Congratulations to all of the producers in this comp!! You are all truly talented, and it was an inspiration to review all of your track. Btw, my track was INTXAUSTI. It is open for review if anyone cares to do so. I wouldn't review my own track for obvious reasons. Thanks! :t:
Soundcloud

Just realized I missed PURITO! I think that's Hutyluty's track too. My sincerest apologize! Here's your review!

PURITO:

Soundcloud

Pros- Love the intro! Amazing synth release automation. I really like the progression. The texture you added, which sounds like a white machine kind of noise, is really cool. The claps are really clean along with the rest of the mix. I love the evolving break, it's really smooth. Great Job!!

No personal suggestions

Well rounded and complete track man good job!! :4:

You did a solid review on my track, and I'll admit it was terrible. I threw the thing together in about an hour, and had intended it to be a technical showcase, along with a time for me to experiment working on, I'd be willing to share after the comp is over.

I guess Sound Design is my strongest area, but I'm always developing new techniques and sounds.

REVIEW:

Betancur:

I really like the piano melody but after that it gets really repetitive and boring IMO. And yeah some ambient hits felt really random.

When starting a new track, just try to get a really cool drum beat first.

PINOT:

Too much repetition in this one...

CANCELLARA:

sounds odd.. sorry

BOASSON-HAGEN:

- really cool sound desing.
- over compressed resee (turn down the sausage fattener m8)
- lack of cymbals
- love the dnb break but I don't think that you should've started with it.

NIBALI:

Speaking of really cool drum beats, this is where u jump in m8 :D
Interesting vocal chops.

MOLLEMA:

You need more variations in the intro at it goes on and on a bit too long.. but the drop is much more interesting tho.
Love the vocal at the beginning.

ROCHE:

That distorted synth is really really not my cup of tea and I can't really feel the sub for some reason.

KNEES:

Really cool atmosphere of the track and it reminds me really much of grime.
The melody plays for too long IMO.
Drum beat is really nice... :D

TXURRUKA:

Unique..

PIEDRA:

I love the production but that vocal doesn't really fit the track IMO.

PURITO:

NO REVIEW FOR U TROLOLOL :corndance:

Yeah headphones can be quite deceptive when it comes to mixing. But overall amazing song. :)

When someone writes shit they know it. It isn't constructive to tell them they're shit it's only disheartening. Everyone in this contest has skills. You act as if it's that easy to get big in the "scene". There are hundreds and hundreds of brilliant producers out there that either are lazy and that's why they're not big or they just don't know how to properly utilize their social resources. If you feel the need to talk shit on someone do it somewhere else. I'm not trying to be an asshole I'm just not into putting up with unconstructive negativity. If you read my suggestions you will see that the ones I felt needed severe improvement it was stated.

I didn't even listen to any of the tracks I'm just saying that there's no way that every single one of them is "amazing". Obviously you can pick out good things in any track but when it comes down to it, it's all personal preference. For example, Rusko is obviously a "good" producer but I don't bump his shit because I don't like it. Just like I don't bump any deep dub regularly.
