If you always do what you've always done...

Post by outbound » Wed Sep 18, 2013 9:23 am

"If you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you've always got."

Whatever you do when you're making your next track make sure to always try something different. Whether it's using different samples, using a plugin in a different way, using a different plugin. Writing a completely different style, bpm, feel etc.

It's so easy to get into the habit of producing in a set way but if we push ourselves and try new ways of working we can expand and make even better music so that's my challenge for today!

I know a guy on idmforums.com who is mostly hardware (mixes ITB) he is always buying/selling/trading gear and decides on a set of tools for each album. Really keeps his work fresh IMO, even though he is always doing ambient.

But spot on thought. Loving it. I think I'm going to set some limits on my next solo project and see where that gets me.

This is a big one I can relate to, recently tried my hand at 180 BPM Drum and Bass for the first time and it's great; really helpful experience.

I'm not saying I'm not one to get stuck on certain production techniques or sounds, far from it, but it blows my mind there are people who get stuck on particulars. I really have a hard time imagining making 140 half time tunes with triplet hi hats again and again and again. I guess if you want to establish yourself in a dance music genre like that you need to stay on a somewhat narrow path. No wonder people up and quit making a certain kind of music.

I don't know a damn thing about minimal techno, but I'm trying it! :h:

I'm pretty much trying to do it using only iMS20 and Maschine. Both things that I don't use very often.

it's actually more of a challenge for me to make the same type of beat twice.

Chad, I just got it. Are you Zombie? Who are you? You are some high end motherfucker, and have so successfully trolled me. I can usually smell you fucks from a mile away, but you really got me. I really hate you. I really don't care if I have to go through your physical embodiment to get to the chaddub troll character you play here, I will kick your fucking teeth in.

Great thread. I find smoking a joint (which I do once in a blue moon) before sitting down to produce, makes me experiment in ways I never would without the smoke. But that really is a rare thing for me these days.

Maybe if you always make absolute bangers, just keep doing that.
