One of my best friends is a pretty known "deathstep" producer.
He claims that the weird weu weu weu underwater vocal thing is due to vocoding.

Not quite sure how we'd obtain it in FM8, since every god damn person around here starts relentlessly shooting me down and bashing on me as soon as i say the word. And ignoring all my advice.
A little tune of mine :D

I'm probably going to regret asking, but what is death step? :|

I really prefer StepStep :cornlol:

Glitched-Wobblecore step is a close second.

I've been getting into a lot of Polkastep lately. Screw growls.... when that bass line drops.... it better be a fucking tuba.

Deathstep:
There once was a kid name Billy, he was searching on the interwebs and found a dubstep song. Started of with a kick and snare, then a slow building atomosphic sound builds up to a cliche drop and he hears the most harsh and over distorted (mid) bass he has ever herd. He instantly dies from lack of musical taste, his friends hear of his death and thus deathstep. His legacy carries on today for every other 12 year old adding step to ever other genre.

Hey WolfCry i would love some insight into how you get your basses so vowel out of fm8 and also what kind of feedback loops are you talking about. Thanks!

The circlejerk is strong with this thread. :w:

Also the growl in ravehunter/wolfcry's song is the most ridiculously easy thing to make.

The "yayaya" shit comes from a triangle modulating a sine, the graininess comes from a formant modulating the sine, or some wave that is equally complex. The reason you get the ya sound is because a triangle has two slopes, each slope is converted to an angle then the synth multiplies the carrier frequency by the angle. This splits the sine in to two peaks creating a vowely yaaa sound. To get the movement you simple automate the volume of the triangle which changes the amount of modulation happening, which then causes the yoyoy movement as the peaks move apart and together.

The graininess occurs because the formant is splitting the simple ya sound in to many different peaks while retaining the same vowel character.

Example: https://soundcloud.com/gregory-t-johnson/yoy/s-UWh4k click the link it is private.

You can use this same principle to get many types of vowels using waves with multiple slopes at different angles.

You can also add triangles at higher octaves for a neat effect.

A vocoder splits the carrier and modulator in to bands via bandpasses or some sort of spectrum analysis (see FFT/Wavelets) It then measures the volume of each band coming from the modulator in a way similar to a peak meter to generate envelopes for each band, then it changes the carrier band volumes based on the modulator bands envelopes, this will in the process destroy a good portion of the fidelity of the carrier signal unless you have a massive amount of bands over the entire spectrum, which is why it can be bad for certain applications such as growls, unless used very sparingly.

Vocoders leave artifacts.

I much prefer just getting a nice sound out of the synth rather than EQing out vowels or vocoding although it can be nice for talking growls, especially if you want to say a certain thing and have your growl mimic that. :)

In fact you can actually take the above process for that "ya" growl, remove the triangle, send it through a vocoder and use your voice as the modulator to get neat vowels and talking growls.

Hope this clears things up a bit.

TL;DR: Science. :corndance:

I really wish you'd leave me alone. The track got a lot of comments, what did i ever say about it? People liked it better, people thought it should win. I didn't provoke them, i didn't do anything about it, people just came to it.
Okay? I'm proud of my work, its a good remix. So if you don't like it, back the fuck off.

@GregoryTJ
- 1. That sound sounds nothing close to my sound. I actually put a lot of time working out the growl, so please don't shoot down my production, i, as many others, put lots of time and effort into my tracks, and i really am starting to feel like crap getting beat on by everybody here when all im trying to do is help.
- 2. Your assumtions are correct about the way i made it, there are a few changes here and there.
A little tune of mine :D

I've been part of this forum for awhile, contributing where i can, and reading a lot of information.
I don't know this guy, and frankly im no fan of his taste in music, but everyone needs to shut the fuck up. Every thread i go to, some dickwad is bashing on him because of his advice or style or just his general EXISTENCE.

Its annoying, and its rude. He's a human too, he has feelings, if you don't like it, shut up about it. I don't like his style, but he sounds like a great producer to me and has lots of production value, and probably will get farther than me, and any of you jerks.

The comments obviously came from the remix competition, since his was an entry and everyone got to hear it.
Oh, and is he not allowed to put tracks in his signature? Especially if hes proud of them? Everyone else does, where does it say its illegal. Fucking dickfag.

And no, its not the easiest growl sound in the world. Why don't you give the guy some credit. Its one of his first tracks too. Did your first track sound like that? Or was it a load of garbage?
How did you feel opening your DAW for the first time and not knowing what on earth each little button did. This is HIS result of that, according to things hes said on other forums, or in past threads.
I doubt you pulled this out of your ass when you first started, let alone even knew that those "LION SOUNDS IN SKRILLEX'S SONG" were even called growls. God.

I'm going to defend him, because you all are mean. Stop bringing him down. Jesus Christ.
I'm going to contact someone on here to do something about this.

I don't care how much time he spent or how new to production he was. No bad intentions were present whilst typing my previous message.

Agreed.... I'm getting kinda of annoyed of silly stupid fights or whatever going on. Like really guys?

Wolf is a good dude and has been more than helpful on here. Also has good ideas, which I fully support.

why does it matter having comments on soundcloud have to do with anything? From what I can tell from that is he can put a good tune up and get good feedback from people. Networked his stuff and has a pretty good audience. Unlike most guys on here who have a very select listening to your stuff.

Isn't the point of making music is to make something enjoyable for other people and yourself. Having pride in yourself thinking wow I just made that and people liked it!

Cut arrogant tnuc shit out guys. None of us are signed to big labels and getting that far in our music.

Next topic..... Like I said before, on how vowel movement can be made inside fm8 and not a format or the eq boost method.

Idk how to do it in Fm8, but just automate the volume of the modulating oscs.

Man that reaction was so much better than I expected. Favourite reply goes to jujment699, bravo. :4:

ily really rave hunter, you've got good ideas and structure but imo your stuff still sounds quite generic... and it sounds like you just followed a couple of SeamlessR's tutorials (I know this probably isn't the case but that's not the point) :c:

oh and...
None of us are signed to big labels and getting that far in our music.
You won't get that far doing growl based music imo anyways... it's stale and needs originality to make it good - which is why certain people are making $$$ from this music and the average joe making yoi's isn't.

Most "big labels" probably aren't looking to sign another bass artist doing the same type of sound work (although that depends on your view of what "big label" constitutes to.)

On a general note (related to someone's reply of "if you don't like it, shut up about it.") people on this forum seem to get way too butt hurt if you comment critically/negatively on their stuff, learn to accept that someone's always going to think your stuff sounds like shit... learn to ask why that is and not to respond with whining.

Let's call and end to these shenanigans. :U:
