The Sub/Low-Mid Range Bass Thread
The Sub/Low-Mid Range Bass Thread
Seeing as we've got official threads for every sound besides this one (reese, growl, etc), I thought it would be helpful for those of us trying to make a deeper, more minimalistic, or "old school" sound to start a thread focusing on old-school sub/low-mid range basses.
In this thread we can disucss sub bass and issues involving that, but also SOME midrange basses, just not harsh brostep ones.
I suppose I'll start out. This is a great tutorial for those who haven't seen it on giving your sub a little bit of character and bringing it into the lower midrange.
To further clarify the purpose of this thread, here are some examples of the types of sounds we're aiming to create in this thread:
on the other hand, the following sound might be considered "old school", but it's not exactly the kind of sound we're looking for in this thread:
Hope this thread takes off and I hope it's helpful to everyone!!!

Re: The Sub/Low-Mid Range Bass Thread
I tried making an alternative bass thread with some sounds like these but no one was interested in my one
Will post in here a lot because ive been trying to work with these sort of sounds. Some old school, and Riddim/Tearout stuff. If that genre is correct ahha
Some examples ive made, if this fits in this realm of stuff. Would explain if interested!
Most of the old school wobble can be made in massive and sound fx stuff but the last video you posted. It seems like its made in fm or in Reason. Still curious on these sounds....
All of my attemps have been made in massive and long resample chains.
Excuse the last bit in this one. Got a cool sound after the int massive patch.

Heres one with some work in fm8, got some interesting sounds. Sorry if there not too low or mid but i think they fall in the sample category.

Re: The Sub/Low-Mid Range Bass Thread
yeah well it's a DMZ tune and they're kinda considered the standard for "old school" dubstep. but thanks mate I'm hoping this thread sees the success of growl and reese. the distance video was great for me too. it's a shame there aren't more tutorials and other resources out there for this type of sound. that's why I started this thread!bennyfroobs wrote:i would not consider horrid henry an oldschool sound really but i like that u used to say what the thread isnt about :p

@R3b_Official - I could see 1, 2, and maybe 3 being appropriate for this thread, but probably not 4 and definitely not 5! But thanks for the contribution!

Funny how producers make such sick shit from 4 or more so years ago and we can barely make shit with all this new stuff we have now

Re: The Sub/Low-Mid Range Bass Thread
ehhh ill take a crack at it this weekend. Busy with school and baseball now so only production days are friday saturday and sunday on a laid back weekend.
Id like to know how he makes it bend? Pitch bend or portamento? Figuring out the midi probably be the hardest since that what gives it that nice feeling.

Re: The Sub/Low-Mid Range Bass Thread
I'd say that would be saw(s) with some portamento, and then obviously an LFO on cutoff. Maybe some effects, probably EQ of course. Ya know...

im wondering how ppl make these fat ass subs with a tinge of midrange, i know it involves distortion etc to add harmonics, maybe using a saw/sq instead of a sine, but anyone got any other tips?

thats just a sine bro.
the tinge of mids you hear is a higher note thats all.
Re: The Sub/Low-Mid Range Bass Thread
it sounds fatter than just a normal sine tho and i swear in the higher notes there are harmonics that aint normally thereActionJesus wrote:kaili wrote:deffo got glide portamento goin on that yedubunked wrote:I'd say that would be saw(s) with some portamento, and then obviously an LFO on cutoff. Re: The Sub/Low-Mid Range Bass Thread
how do ableton users create a nicely compressed and eq'd sub bass?
Re: The Sub/Low-Mid Range Bass Thread
doesn't sound like anything more than a sine to me. but you could look at it under a spectrum analyzer and you might be able to see if it's got harmonics.
