I'd think about getting a console by Valve/Steam for sure.

They basically made the best game ever.

it's just a prebuilt PC for those who can't build their own. The controller looks nice as the market has been playing it safe on that for ages with the exception of some of the innovations Nintendo have made.
I'm mainly amped for SteamOS being a push to get the video card makers and larger publishers the kick in the ass for Linux architecture and to ditch DirectX for OpenGL or working in SDL with how easy it is to port between PC, Mac and Nix with it.
Anything that pushes for Linux is a welcome change to me with the closed architecture Windows uses.

I understand everything you said and I agree.

scratch that;

The steambox will be a pc for evryone who can't build their own, BUT it might have a green led back-lit acrylic decal of a headcrab and Alyx Vance's sexy ass bending over where you put the USB controller into.

Sounds like a customisable console and controller. Good idea. Keen to see how good the feedback is on the touchpads.

There has to be a trade off with price and upgradabilty if it is to draw the console gamer to PC gaming.

Can't see this selling that well, the kinds of people who would want it are generally going to already have PCs anyway and some of the prices are ridiculous...

The controller is hideous

It still is touch responsive in the middle apparently. I like the simplicity of it and the fact it is fully configurable, that won't suit out of the box gamers that are used to pre-mapped button configs for their gaming.

I'm sure the geniuses at Valve have all this on lock, but it seems to me they missed the entire of point of this exercise. The best selling point of the steam boxes, the thing that was going to get them on par with the sale-ability of the consoles and get steam in the living room was having a clever tiered specs system. So you know if you buy a game it's going to run on your box and with what settings. So we can have optimised engines and hardware compatibility. Everyone always counters with the 'but pc tech moves so fast it would be pointless' which is fallacy. Just don't name the Tier 1,2,3 etc, a more dynamic naming system ie: '2014 Base', '2014 Premier' etc. with a ladder scale that people can refer to.

Instead we leave CES with no defined tiers and the established partners just making pre built pcs of all the flavours under the sun. Sure for all us educated PC guys then we know what we need to run what. But we're not the target audience. Just all seems like a massively missed opportunity.

Pretty much what Pete just said also forcing SteamOS so hard is silly when most of the games under steam won't work under it. I found gaming performance awful under Linux when playing Dota 2. In home streaming is pretty neat, best feature coming soon in my opinion.

I'm pretty sure anything released on SteamOS will have developer premapped layouts for the controller.

The pricing of this thing makes Apple look like poundland, and that controller? Nah.
Only decent thing about it is the free steam access
taters on that as we jack it

The prices aren't firm plus Valve doesn't exactly have control since they are letting 3rd parties create what ever they want. You could always build your own pc.
