Mic question

Post by Augment » Sun May 19, 2013 1:30 pm

Looking to buy my first mic, and it's something I know extremely little about. Been looking at the Røde M3 mic, and want something around that price range, but something more expensive is not really a problem. I want to be able to record foley sounds, like random sounds I hear throughout the day, and also my guitar and other stuff. So if anyone could help me out, it would be much appreciated :w:

Just get a clear sounding USB mic. For foley, you don't need the highest of quality. Hell, I was a local theme park recording myself shutting the locker with my phone and that's mp3. :cornlol:

Im using the rockband video game usb mic. It's actually really clear hahah. I honestly dont think it matters too much how good the mic is unless youre recording vocals. Just my opinion.

If hypothetically, one WOULD be looking to record vocals, then what kind of mic would you suggest?

Thanks for the replies, think I'll go with the Røde mic, seems decent enough, especially for the price c:

If price is in consideration I'd say get one of the 50-130$ CADaudio Condenser mics

^ This is an excellent point. A mic pre is essential for the signal chain to work properly (when using a mic.) The Presonus models are good and won't set you back too much. The smaller ART models are even cheaper and not that bad sounding.

Different mics do different things better than others; some "color" the sound, others are known for their transparency (accuracy.) Same with mic pres. This is a whole world unto itself to explore. Time to get a free subscription to Tape Op magazine! :6:

I love my AT2035 mic, they make a usb mic too (the AT2020) and one with more polar patterns (AT2050)

I use it for pretty much any recording. Decent price too.

I use it with an Avid FastTrack c400 d-a converter/preamp
