EQ in Massive / Bass & Kick Mixdown

Post by itsHAZED » Wed Oct 09, 2013 12:48 pm

I have been making my '808' type bass in Massive lately.

I get super confused when it comes to Massive's EQ section when it's involving bass.

How much should I be cranking up the 'Low' parameter, obviously the 'High' should be turned down, but what about 'Boost' and 'Frequency'?

Assuming this is just a sine wave bass?

Ps: After it comes out of Massive I cut below 30Hz and above 80Hz with an EQ and sometimes I slap MaxxBass on it.

Also, throughout all my reading I've seen a lot of places that a good starting point is around -8dB for the kick, and for the bass to be about 2dB less than the kick.

What do you guys usually go by for an 808 type bass, with a punchy kick layered over it?

With an -8ish dB kick and a -11dB or so bass, it seems like the bass is pretty loud, just wondering how to get into the ballpark area of most producers.

Eh, as far as i'm concerned, fuck massive's EQ or anything that isn't a nice 8 band graphic EQ.

Although I wish I could massive reverb as a send... it sounds really good.

Yeah it's kinda confusing with the boost and the frequency and you don't even know what you're boosting. Just needed to hear it from someone else. Thanks!

The EQ is a three band EQ, low/mid/high.

The low knob boosts or cuts using a low shelf, the high knob does the same to the top end using a high shelf.

The frequency knob determines the position of the mid-band eq (which is a peak/notch) and the boost knob determines the width of the peak/notch.

The mid band is modulated as you boost/cut the low or high end - e.g. cut the low end and the mid band peak becomes a notch and you can start to attenuate the midrange too, or alternatively if you boost the low end the midrange will start to become boosted too.

Alright that makes sense, I had no idea what I was doing with it. I guess I'd still rather disable it and just use an EQ after.

it's good if you're trying to quickly slice off the low end or something..or use the eq as more of an instrument but if you're actually polishing the sound definitely stay away haha.
