Korg PadKontrol

Post by Maksimus » Wed Sep 25, 2013 7:30 pm

I have been looking at these for live performance, I want to be able to play a constant loop of a sample and then layer over the top vocal samples etc.

Is this possible or will I only be able to perform one shots?

If it does seem to do what I want it to do, i'll be using it alongside FL11, which has FPC (Fruity Pad control) which appears to be quite good. I can't seem to find much information or videos showing people triggering anything but one shots / drum sounds, thats what made me question it.

Record the sample you want to a pattern, set the pattern to loop, switch instruments/Padkontrol scenes and layer. Rinse, repeat, ????, profit. FPC can trigger longer samples, but honestly I'd just drop the sample in and loop that section then layer.

FL 11 also has Live Performance mode which works somewhat like Ableton's live dj stuff. The PadKontrol comes with native mappings for it. It remaps the whole PadKontrol for controlling FL "block scenes" & triggering samples. You'll be able to trigger 4 rows, with 4 samples per row and can also move within FL to drop down to the next 4x4 block of samples. It's actually pretty fun but takes a fuck load of work to set up a track correctly.

It works awesome to map out over FPC and synths. On the PadKontrol itself you can program the midi notes & channels of up to 16 local scenes. So for just writing music you can set up a scene to do drums, another for bass, another for leads, and you can just switch scenes and keep layering. Again, set up time is the most frustrating part of this. Korg has a utility to change mappings and sync back to the controller which is super helpful. Lets you save backups of your setup too in case you fuck it all up.

I've now been looking at Novation Launchpad S. Mainly as it seems a little more intuitive and apparently works well in FL11. The Padkontrol has more focus on pad sensitivity which is something I'm not as fussed about as I'll not be using it for playing individual drum sounds. I'll have to compare them both side by side.

Cheers for your help!!

The issue is not the controller, but the software it is controlling. FPC does not allow you to loop samples. A more accomplished drum sampler is probably in your future for what you describe. Something along the lines of battery seems more like what you are looking for. FPC is good for quickly setting up one shots.
