Re: Somewhat clean but flavorful source of gain...
I'm no expert on whatever that means, but it sounds delicious and I want one.

I had to google 'vt747sp', you've gotta google 'geta'.nowaysj wrote:Had a couple, but I moded them. I threw a cat gut thong (bye bye Mr. Speckles and Flash) on each and wear them like geta.AxeD wrote:You probably used a vt747sp.
It is only fair.
Re: Somewhat clean but flavorful source of gain...
Had a RNC had to sell it because of poverty lol. I got a damn good deal on it too...125usd. I think this time around I'm just gonna go with a RLA because life is to short for anything but gritty compressors...nowaysj wrote:I'm building a virtual studio (like the original virtual studio - the one in your mind) and I've got RLA's and RNC's on several channels of my 16 track mixer.fragments wrote:FMC Really Nice Leveling Amp or Really Nice Compressor. I like to run things through my JoeMeekMC2 and use the gain to just turn things up, no compression.

In all honesty, that sentence has me stumped. But I'm so tired that I'm losing voluntary control of my eyes, trouble reading.

Re: Somewhat clean but flavorful source of gain...
haha! much better, and TOO TRUE!
Re: Somewhat clean but flavorful source of gain...
The saturator is Ableton is actually pretty good for this, though if the sound in question takes up a ton of the spectrum it tends to be assey.
If you want something with more control, try the "Tape Saturation" thing in iZotope Trash in multinand mode. Layering other distortions, settings the dry/wet fairly low (like 10-30%) and eqing out really annoying frequencies works too.

if you're using audio units, you can't beat "drive" and "density" from airwindows. FREE. and brilliant.
decapitator from soundtoys
Saturn ( think it's saturn?) from Fab Filter
that harmonic EQ from voxengo. also free.
1176 set to no compression, or pultec EQ not doing anything... though the pultec gives you 1db of gain for each instance, at least in the Waves version.
and yes, a distressor at 1:1 with distortion2 on has saved the day many, many times.

Re: Somewhat clean but flavorful source of gain...
Every time that Airwindows guy gets brought up my heart breaks a little that it's AU only. He's got some cool spectral or granular plugs as well if I recall correctly.
Saturn is a usual fixture but I've yet to run that Voxengo Shinechilla plug through its paces yet.
