Listening to older tunes has a triple effect IMO;

1) It helps you realise you can make good music
2) It is a clear indicator of your advancement in production
3) However, it as your knowledge and experience increases, your standards for what you consider a 'good' tune are raised as well.

So it's a double edged sword.
