Sound design in reason 5
Sound design in reason 5
Im taking a computer music class in college and we will be using reason 5. Ive always used logic and don't know a single thing about reason. My professor gave us a quick 5 minute overview of reason and it looks so different! Like it looked really confusing. I know hes going to be able to answer a lot of questions firsthand but i kind of want to go into this class with at least a little bit of knowledge.
Were only going to be able to use what comes with reason 5 and i dont even know really anything about its stock synths. Do you guys have any advice whatsoever?
anything like "this synth will be pretty user friendly and easy to start out wth" or "if your looking for this sound then try using this" would really help and same goes for plugins like what would be my biggest bang for my buck reverb wise and just stuff like that.

Their are heaps of producers who use reason just to get at Malstrom for the sounds it can make (exclusive to reason), so I'd def check that out.

Dude so I literally just got Reason 5 a couple days ago and am reading the Reason 5 book called Power. If you learn any cool tips please share.

Alright i will. I guess ill just keep coming back to this thread and post things because i havent even touched reason in class yet, its an intro class and were currently working on sheet music in Finale. Im kind of ahead of the rest of the class because i already have some self taught knowledge. But my professor is like a musical wizard - i can just hear it when he talks. But im bound to be taught some nifty tricks about reason in class. And the way my schedule works out it has me taking every single class until i get to the really advanced classes.God Komplex wrote:Dude so I literally just got Reason 5 a couple days ago and am reading the Reason 5 book called Power. This doesnt really have to do with reason but one thing that my professor has said was that hes 100% absolutely positive that whoever works on music at home has a ton of unfinished project that started off really well but just kinda dropped off the face of the earth. The reason for it is because its so difficult to actually finish things like that without a deadline - so theres not a whole lot of motivation, or at least not near as much as if there were a deadline. Even professionals have deadlines for whatever label it is that they are working with.
Does this sound pretty accurate to anyone...? Because it does to me.

Super accurate. I have a million projects that aren't finished. I always start a new project every time I open up my DAW. I think I just need another person to give me some opinions and thoughts on my stuff.

i am seriously looking forward to having a deadline for a label, i work best under stress and absolutely suffer from the above problem.Stargazer wrote:whoever works on music at home has a ton of unfinished project that started off really well but just kinda dropped off the face of the earth. I started out on Reason. You should check out The Widdler's stuff to see what can be made in Reason. I'm not sure what all he uses now, but I know for a fact that he used Reason for Froggy Style. Anyways, Thor is great for FM synthesis, Malstrom is great for sub and complex basses (Thor is also good for complex basses), and Subtractor is great for thick supersaws. Scream 4 is also an amazing distortion unit, but use it lightly. Tape is the best distortion on Scream 4 in my opinion. Reason is hands down one amazing DAW, just very underrated. (I apologize for all of these sentence fragments. I didn't have much time at all to type this out)

I agree ^^ Thor is a very powerful synth, the one synth I haven't let go actually. Yes the widdler still uses reason, he regularly still does live production streams which I find very helpful and inspiring actually. When I am home if you can't find the links or no one else has posted it already I will share the link to his streams in this thread.

I think Widdler has a couple up, because I remember a month or so ago I watched his stream, but I can't for the life of me remember if it was live or recorded.
