i do recall reading about how djs started playing either more aggro, either housier stuff to keep people from leaving the floor. don't remember where exactly i read that though

djs were finding themselves having to play harder / faster tunes so that people wouldnt pop out for a cigarette

It's funny how seemingly unrelated factors can influence a sound's development - like one particularly hot summer in Jamaica turning ska into reggae via rocksteady. Too hot to play that many skanks...
