Although processes like deinviduation are worth considering, where individuals in a group find themselves engaging in behaviour they would otherwise never think of, this closing remark makes an important point. I can see how people can obtain quite a lot of meaning from involving themselves with this kind of thing while only having a limited understanding of the issues they claim to be fighting for/against. It provides their lives with a narrative arc that places them this in this epic struggle of good against evil. Any decision making processes are just consumed and critical thought/evaluation of consequences are bypassed resulting in poorly justified impulsive behaviour. Let's block off traffic and verbally abuse passengers on the bus. Why? Are there any good reasons to suggest that blocking traffic and directing verbal aggression towards strangers reduces economic inequality? Is this approach really the most constructive and beneficial to my cause when compared to every other conceivable method? Respect for the guy who was trying to reason with them though, despite being shouted down by the self-justifying mantra, "its anti-capitalism!"
