'live' sets that aren't really live

Laptop & Launchpad do not a live set make.

Shame really as I quite like Shaanxi's music;

Soundcloud

But even contrasting with Egyptian Lover's 808 and vinyl set, this just seems a bit of a lacklustre setup. I understand it can't be all Four Tet/Kareen in terms of full on live randomness, but...meh.

TL/DR - Triggering loops is not a live set.

Completely agree, and to be honest, I'm yet to see a live set that I've enjoyed more than a DJ set.

I'd like to see a Shackleton one though.

I enjoyed Pinch & Sherwood live more than I've enjoyed a Pinch DJ set in a long time.

Pinch on live percussion, keys (I think), and drums (via computer, not an actual drum kit)
Sherwood layering vocals from his mahoosive acapella collection, then real time dubbing/delays/echoes via a mixing desk

If you ever get a chance to see him do it, his sets are on another level.

One of my life goals is to attend to his set @ Burning Man, he is brilliant.

[this might be off tho, I'm not sure if its a regular or live set tho, i guess its regular, coz last time he did a 6hours one] but still...

Just so we're clear, I'm not shitting on DJ sets, nor I am suggesting live sets with hardware are in any way superior (they're just different)

But what I am opposed to is loop triggering masquerading as a live show.

I only consider it live, when the artist creates the music on the spot.
People just got confused when DJs started playing sets without cd players or turntables.

Not saying any other ways are necessarily bad or something.

Welcome to the modern world.

The laptop and controller thing has been happening for at least a decade now.

Saw them as well. Didn't like the music one bit, but it was live that's for sure.

I've seen groups make it too live. As in you really like their electronic music, you go to see their live show and they bring out a whole band in order to make it more "live". More often than not it sucks.

As far as the laptop and a controller thing and playing their own music, when people are performing like that it is not really DJ'ing either. Is there going to be a new "semi-live" or "not quite all the way live" category to promote?

No idea who those people are :?

The issue I have with Launchpads is that it comes across as a bit Guitar Hero...push the buttons in the right order at the right time to get a high score etc.

How is a laptop + midi controller not more "open" than a DJ set? While some people might not utilize them, the possibilities are endless.
