Can you explain the difference between Distance and brostep?

Post by SpacedMan » Fri Dec 06, 2013 3:25 pm

I can admit that I know nothing about the nuances of producing music. That's why I've always been a little confused why people dislike many U.S artists even though many sound like Distance to my ears. Examples are Excision, Datsik and Dowlink. Is it simply because his sound is much heavier, or does he incorporate a different type of skill into his productions? I wish to understand the form more so I can appreciate when I'm hearing a really talented producer.

Or is this all simply a manner of personal taste?

examples? because to be honest, I've never heard a tune by distance that sounded like the people you've mentioned.

He doesn't have just a single sound also brostep and the stuff distance makes it's alike unless you can give me some sort of example.

Best way of describing the difference is just using your ears..

Distance's tunes here are very good heavy dubstep tunes and the others seem very gimicky.

It's like they've gone "ppl are using these sick growls mate, im gonna get on all over that" and just put shitloads of wobbly growly yois in a tune with nothing else.

The Distances tunes have quite deep and well mixed down mid-range so even though its aggressive it maintains that deep bass sound and doesn't hurt your ears. The others have quite a lot of high pitched sounds.

The 2nd drop on that Datsik song is a perfect example. Brostep can't really help but be as noisey as possible and that often includes some harsh, high pitched noise that destroys your ears.

I love listening to some old Excision. Also his Darkside Dubstep mix from 2006 is one of my favourites.

Also something I like very much about Distance is the deep, dark atmosphere all his tunes have, e.g

recent rottun output (save truth) is kind of like the asking alexandria of dubstep. distance...isn't. not only is his knowledge of music more profound imo, as others have stated his sound is heavy yet still very minimal, not blown up in your face dialupmodemstep.

whether or not distance makes shit music is up to the listener.

distance (afaik) came from like a rock/metal music background, which is probs why his tunes sound the way they do. ive never liked his tunes.

dungeonbrostep

he is a good producer though

this. +I don't get why darker dubstep like Distance stuff is labelled 'dungeon', afaik he was already doing his thing well before the whole dungeon style became the trend..

Every time I've played a Distance or Tunnidge tune to a brostepper and said that "this is the closest thing I have to brostep," they've denied that it has any relationship to brostep. Never asked for an explanation.
"At our dance, no one's watching anyone really. They're just there in their own space having a good time... It's not like an old rave where everyone wants to come and hug you and be your friend. There's no moodiness. Not in our dance... It's just purely sound."
