Looking to get into FM synthesis.
I've read several time that is is best to learn one or two synth inside and out, so my first choice was Massive, and I'd say it was a good one to start with. I love the ability to map different automation styles to almost anything, and I feel pretty comfortable with it by now, but I've heard lot of good things about FM synthesis, so that is where I'd look to go next.
I did the old "From FL studio to Ableton" thing, so I have both Operator and Sytrus. I've used operator for a few things and get the basic idea, but i don't like the automation in it nearly as much as massive. I've started poking around in Sytrus, and while it seems better than operator, I still don't like its UI that much (and I overall dislike producing in FL studio) I've heard a lot of good things about FM8, so I'm considering getting it. I also already know NI makes good stuff form my experience with Massive. The main thing im looking for is flexibility and UI
tl;dr FM8 vs Operator vs Sytrus

Re: Looking to get into FM synthesis.
FM8 does have multi-segment envelopes for each operator if that's what you're asking. Watch a intro tutorial to familiarize yourself with the interface.
Can't you just run Sytrus as a VSTi in Ableton?

Re: Looking to get into FM synthesis.
FL still has the best step sequencer and piano roll out of all the daws.
Re: Looking to get into FM synthesis.
Yeah I guess if you actually wanted to use a step sequencer... It's probably one of the only DAWs that still has one.
As for piano rolls, Reaper's is fantastic. Haven't learned all the tricks with Ableton's yet.
FL is terrible in a lot of other capacities. Having to route instruments to tracks is a pain in the dick, and having to scroll that little pattern selector to try and find a clip you're looking for? Eugh. It reminds me of all the bad aspects of having to patch together hardware boxes. It's got a few cool built in effects but a lot of them are garbage. Not enough to warrant having to use that floating mixer with tiny faders. If anything, just grab the few IL plugins that are decent and use them in a different host.

Re: Looking to get into FM synthesis.
I name my patterns so i don't have trouble with that
Re: Looking to get into FM synthesis.
The only thing i really liked about FL was all the pretty colors. Im a sucker for pretty colors. (esp. in that EQ *3*)SunkLo wrote: FL is terrible in a lot of other capacities. Re: Looking to get into FM synthesis.
Fl seems to be like some kind of home garage project for some reason. Is that just me?
Re: Looking to get into FM synthesis.
Without downloading custom skins, it actually looks pretty shit in my opinionre6ter wrote:Fl seems to be like some kind of home garage project for some reason. Is that just me?

Can't really say anything about stock plugins, because I was usually using stuff from Waves/Native Instruments/Rob Papen/Sugarbyte/CamelAudio (pirate bay was my friend) straight from the start
