Re: Looking to get into FM synthesis.
How my daw looks really doesn't matter to me as long as I can do shit with it

User interface functionality actually plays a pretty big role in workflow efficiency. Ultimately it's paramount to learn your DAW inside and out but certain tasks can be made a lot more simple by a well designed UI.

or just learn how to do it and you won't have to go through the longness of finding out how to do something again. simple? your reasons for disliking fl are pretty weak at best. (and your knowledge of 'famous' producers who use fl studio to produce is also slightly lacking)SunkLo wrote:... said the man with the ugly DAW.

Re: Looking to get into FM synthesis.
I choose the top one. The bottom one's too busy.
Re: Looking to get into FM synthesis.
Fair enough, but the question was which one is more visually appealing. One guy was saying FL looks like sht, just providing a counter argument is all. I like pretty colors

Re: Looking to get into FM synthesis.
Can you change the colors in Fruity Loops? Because that color scheme looks gash to me to be honest.
Also, it looks like OP's FM thread has been hijacked. It's alright though, there are probably about 1000 threads about FM synths in here. Operator is great, FM8 is a beast, just buy it unlike -Agu-, and I've never used Sytrus.
A Yamaha TX81z is a cheap hardware alternative if you want to get your hands dirty.

Re: Looking to get into FM synthesis.
Yea you can change em, which I'm sure you can do in Abelton too. I usually just roll with stock color scheme because I'm lazy though, but I found that colorful one on Google and posted in defense of FL

Re: Looking to get into FM synthesis.
It's not a matter of knowing how to do something or not. It's also not a matter of "ooh that looks pretty" although that can impact how creative you feel. Don't wanna be looking at Microsoft Excel trying to make beats. What does affect your workflow regardless of how well you know your DAW, is for instance how many clicks it take to perform a certain task. (Having to route an instrument to a mixer track before you can put an effect on it is a good example) That's what I mean by interface functionality.oner_music wrote:or just learn how to do it and you won't have to go through the longness of finding out how to do something again. simple? your reasons for disliking fl are pretty weak at best. The whole "X producer uses DAW Y" is probably one of the stupidest things I've ever encountered on production forums. I couldn't give 5 millifucks about who uses what. I judge a DAW by its useability and a producer by their output. I think Reaper's one of the best DAWs to ever exist and barely anyone famous uses it. Who cares.

Re: Looking to get into FM synthesis.
True, I understand this logic. But for guys who have been "making an extra click" for years can't fathom changing an entire DAW just to avoid "one click".SunkLo wrote: is for instance how many clicks it take to perform a certain task. Ultimately it's that simple. Surely for different tasks, there is more difference than one click. But in this case, personally I think it's better organized to have every track routed to the mixer by a number. Some may disagree, but in the end 'to each their own'.

Re: Looking to get into FM synthesis.
Yep. It's usually a multitude of factors that cause someone to switch DAWs. I started using Ableton a while ago for the better midi functionality, racks and macros, and non-linear composition. It's been a pretty nice change of pace. Also the UI looks a lot better in Live 9, they've got a nice gunmetal theme as the stock one that looks sexy.
Anyway this whole DAW debate started because the genius chaddub had to ask why anyone would ever switch from FL to Ableton. For which I can think of a multitude of reasons but that's pretty irrelevant ultimately. Pretty sure OP's just gonna run Sytrus in Ableton.

They both look messy and complicated.

Shouldn't matter which DAW someone uses. If it works for them.
Doesn't Spor produce in Traktor or some random DAW. Perfect example

Traktor's DJ software. Pretty sure Spor uses FL.
Am I missing a joke regarding Sytrus? Seems like the best option given that he already knows how to use it and doesn't wanna shell out for FM8.

Re: Looking to get into FM synthesis.
Yea wasn't sure, never bothered to learn about Traktor, was just stating that professionals use whatever is best for them. And they are professionals.
I thought you were being facetious about Sytrus, I personally hate Sytrus but I've heard others rave about it's capabilities.

I've never really fucked with it, he just said that's what he was already using and didn't know you could load it as a vst into Ableton. If it ain't broke...

^This is what I meant when saying basic FL skin looks shit which is just my opinion.

I agree with this, buy it, cracked stuff really fucks up your computer (not only viruses that come within torrents, but cracked applications crash easily and some have problems opening saved patches etc.). I was 14 or 15 when first got into the world of electronic music, didn't have money to pay for plugins, and had crappy computer so I didn't really care.
