Anyone else find it quite funny that the Fact article put so much emphasis on suggesting this record was Burial's way of coming out as gay or transgender - especially as they know he has no online presence to come and say anything about it

What do you think, they just pulled it out of the air? Even before that article came out, I was wondering the same thing. There's enough evidence on here to suggest that Burial's come out strongly in support of gay and transgender rights and an end to bigotry.

In fact, the track that's gut everyone buzzing about what it means, also happens to be my favorite track on here: Come Down to Us. Just a gorgeous track.

lol, yes, exactly that. it'll get people clicking onto their page and will increase their ad revenue.

There's enough evidence on here to suggest that Burial's come out strongly in support of gay and transgender rights and an end to bigotry.

How brave of a man that nobody knows to come out strongly in support of something. Reveal who you are, and get a ton of attention to reveal your views? Nah. Give an interview where you talk about how passionate you are about LGBT rights? Nah. Use samples to create a cryptic moment in a 10 minute long tune. Yeah, that'll do.

Burial should come out in an interview to say what he thinks? In that case, why would he bother making music? He speaks through his music. He's has a wealth of samples to choose from - like, you know, every film ever made, every tv show, every speech. He chose his samples for a reason, there's thought and intention behind it, he's letting those works speak in his music. Much more powerful than a mere interview.

Good art will always inspire/enrage/mystify/tantalise/perplex and perhaps, most importantly make you think.

I consider myself a die hard fan of Burial, but even I find myself mind boggled by people saying this is better than Untrue. I do love me some of the bits in here and some I applaud Burial for trying something different, even though I didn't like all of the bits. Still got love for Burial and he's definitely not over.

Also I don't think that because of this sample usage it means Burial is coming out of the closet as pointed out by the review from Factmag which made me lol, perhaps he is looking way too deep into things and he's actually using it as an excuse cover up to come out himself.

It's a record. Leave any preconceptions at the door.
Try to open your mind, and enjoy.
If it's not for you, don't complain it's just music.
Move onto something else.
Burial will still release music in the future whether we're into it or not.....

For the record I think it's a brave and clever release that wrong foots you at every turn.

That's not the artist's fault though.

Like a few of you, I'd trade everything from NYC/Stolen Dog/Thom Yorke & Four Tet collab onwards for a half decent quality Lambeth/Feral.

I think you forget just how long ago some of those tunes were made. When he talked about making Burial he said some of the tunes he sent to Kode9 for consideration were from 2001. Even if we're talking about Untrue era, that's getting on for 7 years ago. It's completely reasonable for an artist to want to change up what they're doing after that period of time. If Feral Witchchild doesn't get released, remember that it's at least 7 years old, and could be 12 years old. Burial/Kode9 might absolutely hate those tunes now.

Like the new Burial stuff or not, at least when he's changed his style up, it still doesn't sound like anything else out there, and it's not as if there's a shortage of people making Untrue-style tunes if that's what you wanna hear.

I think those quotes are slightly out of context. I'm not suggesting the ridiculous hype is his fault. I was just saying it's bound to affect an artist after a while, consciously or not.

And I'm not clamouring for him to release old stuff, it's just that I get more out of those two 24kbps clips than I have out of NYC/Ashtray/this etc. I can't remember the exact timeline of his releases, I loved Moth/Wolfcub/Fostercare and the Woon remix but nothing since that.

I don't hold it against him that he's changed it up, it's just a shame his new stuff doesn't do it for me.

Here it is, laid out:

1) Rival Dealer:
- at 2:15, the music/beat suddenly fades out, and a voice comes in and says, "This is who I am." Then the music re-enters
- at 4:15, a voice comes in and says, "It's about sexuality, it's about finding the person who you are. [Now between you and me(?)] this is who I am about."
- at 5:00 a voice says, "Sometimes you try to find yourself. But you run away. That's what happened to me."
- Again, the voice comes in at 6:00 and says, "This is who I am."
- Again, at 9:15: "This is who I am."
- The last voice heard, ending this track, says over and over: "Come down to us. Come down to us." (Which is the name of the last track, clearly a key track here.)

2) Hiders:
- First voice says: "There's a kid somewhere..." (Implying some kids are lost, as Lana herself - see below - talks about being lost. Burial's album seems to have this theme of reaching out.)
- The voice sings, "Now the sunlight's come." Then: "Offers protection. Offers protection."
- Then the voice sings, "You don't have to be alone. You don't have to be alone."
- This too, like the first song, ends with the voice saying at 3:47: "Come down to us." Leading to the last track:

3) Come Down to Us:
- the song begins with a voice saying, "Excuse me, I'm lost." Then a voice says, "Who are you? Why don't you come to me?"
- some of the lyrics, from what I can make out: "Come on in. Come down to us."
- a voice speaks, "The moment when you see who you are."
- at 10:48 a voice says, "You are not alone." Then immediately comes the same sample that's in "Loner" on Kindred: "There's something out there."
- at 11:37 the voice repeats: "You are not alone."
- long silence, then:
- the song - and the EP - ends with a long quote from Lana Wachowski's HRC Visibility Award Acceptance Speech. Wachowski is a transgender, s/he made The Matrix and V for Vendetta along with her brother. The quote that ends the EP: "Without examples, without models, I began to believe voices in my head - that I was a freak, that I am broken, that there is something wrong with me, that I will never be lovable... Years later I find the courage to admit that I am transgender and this doesn’t mean that I am unlovable... So that this world that we imagine in this room might be used to gain access to other rooms, to other worlds previously unimaginable."

Then we hear the voices that began this track, including: "Who are you? Why don't you come to me?"

End of EP.

I don't know that Burial is "coming out," as the Fact Mag writer wrote. I do think however that Burial's come out strongly in support of gay and transgender rights and an end to bigotry - and any and all who feel "lost," "truant," who are "sleeping rough," "homeless." Lana Wachowski's speech, the part about "this world that we imagine... might be used to gain access to other rooms, to other worlds previously unimaginable," is what this EP is about. "Come on in, out of the cold."

Brilliant EP, I really think this is a grower, and should garner a lot of praise.

You've seen/read the old Blackdown interview haven't you where he said he doesn't use the internet or have social media and the like. (is it the Blackdown one? can't remember exactly)
Based on some of the guff that's been written over the years it's nos surprise he/she doesn't engage with the circus.

Isolation from internet opinion and comment has probably helped in all fairness.

This release is a true release, i feel sorry for the ones who didnt feel it. But this is it. True and its trying to say sth, i get you, but wth man, i dont see the point of waiting for some old tunes like feral or speedball etc to be released, it has its own magic like this. i bet if i dont know rival dealer would be 6 years old unreleased track, ppl would moan for it.
One of his best eps. This.
and now its fair to say lol at the guy who wrote on soundcloud to everyone that if they think this is burial they dont know him.
