Zed Bias / Steve Gurley etc. @ FWD>>?
Funky House certainly is an 'interesting' direction. But it's not FWD music is it? It's a positively retroactive move putting it on at fwd. It's currently en vogue and i see its appeal but FWD has never really been about following trends, rather setting them.Blackdown wrote:I think funky house is an interesting direction for FWD>>. While i prefer grime by a long way, when the 'nuum mutates, as it clearly did last summer, you just have to go with it or get left behind - just as the original UKG crew were when grime and dubstep came about.
Still, i think Forward>> needs more vocal grime sets, plus international DJs like Joe Nice, Martyn etc.
And is funky house a mutation of the 'nuum? where are the new ideas which would be indicative of this? Isnt' funky house just house rebranded for the urban market? Sure, some of it is sonically great but it's not exactly new.

In the words of Flowdan, i know, and i'm not unconditionally behind it, in fact i was very quick to critisize funky house for it's lack of ideas, but perhaps it's one possible antidote needed to lack of ballance caused by the over agressive, dark, masculine wobble-drop contest far to much of dubstep is heading down.boomnoise wrote:Funky House certainly is an 'interesting' direction. that seems a funny way to look at things - surely a preferable 'antidote' would be enouraging the current roster of DJs to play more FWD-looking tunes/sets, or booking more original DJs with greater regularity - as opposed to whacking on some funky house just because of the Rinse connection.Blackdown wrote:i was very quick to critisize funky house for it's lack of ideas, but perhaps it's one possible antidote needed to lack of ballance caused by the over agressive, dark, masculine wobble-drop contest far to much of dubstep is heading down.
More often than not I don't like discussing a nite's music policy, feeling it's more like making a series of demands upon something over which I have no rights, but I do think in some ways FWD>> has a certain responsibility to lead the way, and I don't think funky house is the correct path.
What DJs within Dubstep would you like to see booked more? Or are you talking about Grime? Interesting topic.ThinKing wrote:that seems a funny way to look at things - surely a preferable 'antidote' would be enouraging the current roster of DJs to play more FWD-looking tunes/sets, or booking more original DJs with greater regularity - as opposed to whacking on some funky house just because of the Rinse connection.Blackdown wrote:i was very quick to critisize funky house for it's lack of ideas, but perhaps it's one possible antidote needed to lack of ballance caused by the over agressive, dark, masculine wobble-drop contest far to much of dubstep is heading down.

Can a club or night ever be said to have an artistic duty or should promoters book who the fuck they like to earn their Ps and we should all either shut up or start our own nights? Deep!
disco grime !!!!
Shameless plug here - I made a tune called Conundrum which only came out on a Nu jazz Label (last year) so never made it into dubstep shops. .. which is a pitty coz it was intended for that. Made back in 2004 it was my attempt at disco grime - it seemed to go down well at fwd but played elsewhere it would confuse the dancefloor... it might make more sense now.

Its the Grimey & VIP mixes to check (the vip never got served to anyone)
Also can listen to it on myspace.
Soulful funky dubstep - it can be done (err im still working on it ! soon come tho)
Actually people should check Zed Bias new album out soon - sick trumpet records. Wicked urban house grooves but with his swingy beats.

firstly, I ought to say I haven't actually been since 2004, so I should really keep my nose out of this discussion completely. I'm an opinionated fucker tho, so.....docdoom wrote:What DJs within Dubstep would you like to see booked more? Or are you talking about Grime? Interesting topic.

DJs - I'd like to see the current regulars encouraged to take as many risks as possible. Yes I know they play the most upfront shizzle possible, but how about the odd older tune thrown in, mix it up a bit, support newer artists rather than the usual crowd of DMZ, Skream, Benga, Kromestar, etc etc. I think longer sets would encourage this - not just 90-120 mins for the first DJ, how about only 2 DJs per nite?? Or even one? Dangerous to fuck with a well-worn formula I know, but nites like FWD don't become the flagship for a scene without taking chances.
There's also no harm in booking a wider spread of DJs. Ammunition does have a certain protectionist element, from exclusive mp3 sales on dubplate.net to exclusive artist signings - and I do think this is somewhat reflected in bookings at FWD. Again, this is their prerogative, but it would be nice to see Pinch or Distance down there more often, or maybe even Peverelist, Cyrus, Kromestar, Bunzero (??!!), Scuba...the list is endless. FWD is almost unique in not seeing the entire dubstep scene as fair game for a DJ booking at their nite - I would say most other promoters have a wishlist as long as their arm.
As for whether we are even in a position to be shooting our mouth off about FWD when it's basically 'just' another nite - well, we certainly don't dissect or criticise ANY other clubnight in the same way. However, with success comes scrutiny as Heat Magazine readers will know, so I think any aspect of the Ammunition empire is fair game simply because they have driven so much of this scene for the past 5 years. The question really is whether they should take any notice, or even take offence - and noone can answer that but themselves...
edit: and woooh! Landslide on the forum! I was gonna add something about missing the old FWD residents like Mr Land, SLT and J da. Landslide makes music that is sorely underrepresented in this scene, tunes like Conundrum and It's Not Over are still deep and heavy as fuck, but retain a genuine element of soul to boot. Give us a shout some time Tim, still waiting to hear some new beats.
ok...
In defense of the House DJ's on rinse!
I think everyone is gettin excited about the hole "FUNKY" word. I listen to rinse in the day and I like some of the house and vibes im hearin. Some of it is deep.
Alot of the house I hear Supa D, MA 1, Able and dem guys play is just House... not funky, disco what ever the fuck you wanna call it! Alot of these tracks are built in the UK to! There is a new underground UK house seen growing and picking up producers.
So really they are fwd thinking producers based in the UK building a UK sound just like UK 2step garage and eventually Dubstep. If so... this justifies a house set at fwd.
I belive if your goin to do it, it needs to be on a warm up (like it was). The transition between Dubstep to house is quite a gap.
I wouldnt personally go to a full house nite, that aint my thing, but there is still influences in house and techno that you can inject into your production in what ever genre you make.
People used to play 2step garage and 4x4 type house tunes at fwd>> back in the day and really dubstep was a hybrid of garage.
Everyone needs to calm down, FWD>> wont change into a ALL HOUSE nite, its always been about dubstep and grime.
Im just trying to bring balance to the topic. Im not bang on house but I can see the reasons behind them doin the set the other day.

Ntypes saying what I was saying the other day... Supa D's shows espescially are good cos he fully reps uk house producers... some of the tunes are whicked taking broken beats and nice bass lines... This stuff "sounds" uk and has a nice groove to it - to me it sounds like the good side of garage from quiet a few years back...
thing with dubstep is - is that it came from garage... a lot of the people getting on it now/ who got on it more recently seem to disregard the fact that it came from garage/ dont like garage and dont give it any credit. A number of people prefer to make out that it takes more influences from techno and drum and bass when woth out garage we wouldnt have fwd or dubstep. One could say that with out ammunition/ fwd - that dubstep possibly wouldnt be around now. So I think we need to give full credit to fwd and rinse and geenius, sarah and who ever else people like to come and moan about and let them do their thing.
I think a house warm up is a good look. allows one to talk and have a drink whilst listening to some different music befor getting involved in a -5 hour dubstepathon.
ps would like to hear landslide play/ hear his tunes... whicked sounds.

Seems like there are some produces coming up with with a warm organic deep-house inspired sound at the moment (e.g. Silkie and Quest/Conquest)...
There's a few bits on the recent Underground Soundz ft Underground Ice mix.
Anybody feeling those?
