I'm actually so used to wearing headphones that I feel more comfortable with them on, even if I'm not listening to anything. If I'm trying to focus on reading something it's headphones on, hood up. Almost like horse-blinders or something.
See my above post, I do literally walk around with them on, like late at night, I've found you can put the plug into your watch band so its not flopping around.
Major Nerd Alert.
Also have my cord bundled up in the middle, too long for sitting in my little studio/laptop production.
One thing I don't like about those dt's and NOT listening to anything through them, they only let really low ambient bass tones through, and then you realize the extent of low frequency bass pollution in your environment. Just low fucked up oscillations that you know your body/brain is picking up on fucking your shit unknowingly. My fridge is fucked, and something outside of my place is just wobbling away 24/7 wubwubwubwub.

Sample dat shit bruh. But yeah I feel you, old house noises are weird. Even your computer. My PC is pretty much constantly turned on, and times when I have to restart it for whatever reason, everything seems so quiet. Nothing annoys me like the water pump though, just hearing loud oscillations that are feedbacking through pipes n shit. Pretty sure the pipe diameter corresponds perfectly to the fundamental frequency of the pump or one of its harmonics because that shit is loud as hell.
Again, maybe I should sample it. To fully imprint the sonic scenery in my life that causes me strife into my music. Along with talking heads on a blaring TV being filtered through a wall.

Yeah, I spent a bit of money when I was balling to build a quiet pc, shit was quiet, could ldc record around it. Now though, the fans are noisy, and just makes this tense noise all the time. Why I like working on my laptop. I gotta decide what I want to do with this computer. It is time for a win 8 system and have nothing to spend... fucked on this one. Already sold off most of my gear.

Win7x64 final answer.
But yeah I was thinking of watercooling mine, although there's still a heatsink fan I guess and the pump noise. I've seen a few cases that are designed really well that don't need as much fan cooling. Mine's got a big intake fan on the top and an exhaust fan in the back, as well as an intake fan behind the front grille. If you rotated it 90 degrees the heat would rise out through the top and wouldn't need the exhaust fan to do as much work. Putting money into a silent pc is only worth it if the rest of your environment is super quiet too. Someday if I build a nice studio I'll invest into it.

That means you have a relatively quiet environment though.

Please just buy the Focals so I can grill you on their quality afterwards.

Only heard the Focal's once and not with my own reference tracks, but they sounded so
tight. Think a friend of mine just bought them, I'll check with him.
Otherwise i'll do some comparing at pls messe, but that's not till March
Anyway, those m50's are supposed to translate to speakers really well, but every ear is different of course.

Sennheiseer HD 558's. Just bought them last week.
You also NEED a DAC (digital to analog converter) if you're running it through a laptop. I recommend Audioquest Dragonfly but if you want a tube DAC try Aune T1.
You can get a pair of HD 558's for $140 at Best Buy (normally $200), Dragonfly is also around $100 on sale, or double that for a T1

I got HD 595's for $45 on ebay. They're pretty nice, almost too detailed sometimes. I'll be able to hear something fine on them but then listen on a different system and can't hear shit. They feel super dynamic, like turning off a compressor that's been permanently on up until then. I imagine the open backs contribute to this significantly. Velour pads n all that, they're super comfy and light. I like their frequency response, warm but still detailed. They still feel pretty crisp despite not having that shrill overemphasized treble.
The M50s for me have a plastic top end. I think they sound kinda scooped and grainy but they do translate pretty well. NS10s of headphones. I also need to upgrade my DAC and amp and I've heard they respond well to better amplification and conversion so take what I say with a grain of salt. I'll reformulate my opinion once I've got a better chain.
The DAC/headphone amp combo I plan on buying is the Schiit Modi/Magni. Every time I get close to $200 saved up I end up having to spend it on random shit. I've been planning to get it for months, dunno why it's taken so long. Should be bought by the end of the year.
My next purchase after that will probably be the Focals or Sony MDR7520 which I've heard are also really good.

I'd have no problem recommending the Shure SRH940's if the build quality wasn't shit.
Best sound quality I've heard in a pair of headphones, but the extenders snap even with the utmost care. I've had mine snap twice on me. The only reason I haven't had it happen many more times than that, though, is because I procrastinate and wait a few months before getting them repaired. Closed back, but sound reproduction is very spacial as in an open-back pair.
Uhmmm………HD 598‽ A very nice-sounding and fairly accurate pair, as well. These ones are actually open-back. They are a bit dull in comparison with the 940's, though, and I much prefer the sound of the 940's. Sennheiser is good about making things that are very difficult to break, though. I wish Shures were like that. I may have to get myself an open-back pair eventually, but until then, I'll just keep getting my 940's repaired. Atleast they sound fantastic and they extend the warranty another year every time I get a repair.
