Re: Breakstep
The Our Sound Vol 1 & 2 compilations on Destructive records are a good place for breakstep. Scarecrow for me always made sick sounding tunes and Vex'd vs Search & Destroy - End OF Line is heavyweight.

now a question to you lot, does this qualify as breakstep? i know it's not particularly dark or idm-ish but i love the vibe of it

Re: Breakstep
I can't imagine Dubstep existing without the heavy Breakstep influence circa 2004/2005.
I do miss this genre, thought it was close to non-existence (no offence Breakstep producers).

Re: Breakstep
Urban Graffiti are simply a legendary label. Such a good and consistent back catalogue.... I'm talking Toasty, SLT Mob, Sully, Reso, Redline, apart from obvious Rogue Star, H*O*D and myself. Solid label!
I still remember one of the first 'dubstep' nights i went to (The Rephlex Grime launch party @ The End)....Rogue Star on the mic & SLT (plus MRK1 & Plastician) tearing it up.... No one even knew how to dance to stuff back then but it was like a musical epiphany. Such an honour to have Rogue do the MC duties on some of my sets since then.
I think that a lot of the original breakstep crew didn;t classify their sound as breakstep...it was all just seen as different angles of dubstep and maybe this is why it never really got it's own identity.... Of course genre names are just genre names and real producers just write music and let journalists/fans classify it as they wish....

Re: Breakstep
It seemed that breakstep and dubstep both became common parlance around the same time in 2001-2 and a lot of the DJ's playing darker dubwise 2-step were playing both. I know I was.
Re: Breakstep
I remember the word "dubstep" coming along well after breakstep and in between that time there was instrumental grime and the various names people were giving on the darker offshoots of that, "sublow" and the like. Just my rusty ruminations on things.
