All power to the hyperdub, someone has to provide an alternative.

I wish people wrote a little "because" after saying large or awful.
ok then. Yes, personally i don't get down on the 8-bit thing. I understand that some people like to work within certain limitations to see how far they can be pushed, but to me (and i'm talking in general here), I think that it the particular limitations of 8-bit are to the detriment of the quality of the music. It was used for video games in the 80s cos that was mostly all that was available/possible whilst keeping things viable for the home market, but nowadays that's not the case and I genuinely don't enjoy the soundset, even as a nostalgia thing.

that said I massively respect the hyperdub release ethic, some I like & some I don't, but it's always interesting music that makes me stop and think - not something I can say about an awful lot of the music I hear.

big look for hyperdub. I like how it's been near impossible to come up with a blanket statement for their label.

K9 seems to keep pushing the boundaries of whatever box dubstep tries to put hyperdub in. Nice.

Just not into this. I Feel it's only liked because of Kode9's cultural capital and not based on merit...

why is there a lack of merit? in terms of melodic content, drum programming, texture, its up there above most dubstep. its just a different soundset, different production choices, which may or may not agree with different people. fair enough if it doesnt rub you the right way but merit is a different thing.

plus imo there is a lot of artistic merit in pushing a sound which is so different / alien, aside from more traditional ideas of merit

(not aimed at anyone in particular btw, but to all those saying that its only kode9's involvement that people are 'buying into')

There was a thread about the 9 samurai rmx AGES ago (sorry mods but the dubstep forum search is waste:( )

A whole bunch of people bigged up the originality and quality of the tune a long time before Kode 9 planned to release it.

I don't think people are jumping on this tune because of Hyperdubs releasing it, rather the fact it is left field, well made and a bit interesting....

a year ago everyone liked this tune.

the dubstep scene's gone fickle. We knew it would happen eventually

I agree that dubstep could do with some new sounds, but 80's computer games aren't exactly groundbreaking. In terms of the music, I don't have a problem with that, I just don't think chip sounds are a particularly pleasant choice to orchestrate it. Skeng played on banjo would be interesting, but apart from novelty value I don't think it would really add anything to the original.

To my mind it's like reading a heartfelt elegy through a kazoo.
Hmm....
