My point exactly. Language is difficult, isn't it? It's easy to cherry pick a single word and completely miss someone's point, isn't it?

The problem is that words aren't inherently racist (ok, we can argue the n-word is inherently racist), it's the intentions behind the words that are racist. It's pretty obvious from my posting and even more from my lifestyle that I'm not a terribly racist person - which is why it's frustrating to watch people try and twist a single word of one of my posts and use it to try and argue that I am actually a racist. Of course it's possible to use any of these words in a racist context, just as it's possible to use them appropriately.

My "gut" feel (which isn't worth very much) is that labelling people as various colours of the rainbow is more divisive than using the geographic region where those aesthetics evolved. Most 'white' people wouldn't have a problem with being called Caucasian or European, Asian is a pretty well accepted term compared to "Yellow" or "Brown" and "Red" hasn't been acceptable for a Native American for decades. Generally, as time moves forward and we all gravitate to the more politically correct, it seems to be the colours we lose, not the geographical markers.

There's a pretty important distinction to make between genetics and culture - they're very different aspects of a person's identity, but both very much still part of that identity. When picking friends or employees I rely entirely on culture - are they interested in similar things to me? Will our opinions be able to co-exist? Can I understand the language they're speaking? When I'm talking to my Doctor, I'd probably want to lean more on my genetics than culture - what diseases am I more prone to? What allergies am I more likely to have? How can I stop my scalp falling off every time the sun comes out?

Again, words and intentions. Reducing the conversation down to a list of "allowed" words and phrases completely misses the point - describing difference isn't wrong, it's only treating people as inferior/superior based on those descriptions that's racist.

I'm not sure if you noticed, but this started with a single sentence about me being happy about my girl's new business venture; since that point I've only responded to others. You came in to join the argument 3 pages late and then complain about me "making this into an argument". Do not try and make this out like I'm the one stretching the conversation out... The "African American" point which you took issue with came up because nihilism said:

Again, the only reason I brought "African-American" into it was in reply to nihilism suggesting that African *only* referred to people who currently live in Africa rather than being a fairly malleable adjective that could be ascribed to a thousand qualities that either reside or originated in Africa. The existence of tens of millions of self-defined African-Americans who don't have a problem with the word "African" showed that his assumption was short-sighted.

For some reason you hopped into the discussion a couple of pages in and tried to make a new argument from the ruins of the old one. It's embarrassing for everyone involved right now.

The only reason the phrase "African American" was brought into the conversation was to make a point (to nihilism, not you) that many things can be described as African for many different reasons and different parts of people's identities can be described using different terms, none of which have to be exclusive - it's perfectly possible to be both African and British or both German and Asian. Never did I say that all black people the world over should only be referred to as "African" as you seem to think I did by bringing Cuba into it - but that it's probably not terribly harmful to use the term "African Hair" when talking about products specifically aimed at a certain type of hair.

2. There ARE black people that aren't from Africa, known as negritos. This is not the same as like African-Americans or whatever. Their ancestry is not African (unless you go really far back, but at that point, everyone is African), but they are black. They're from India, Thailand, Malaysia, etc.
