yes you used it and said
"Have you ever run this little argument past one of the tens of millions of African-Americans who refer to themselves proudly as African every day of their lives or are you too short sighted to see past your own hastily-thrown-together opinion?"
I doubt this is about hair

"Arguably, yes."

My point exactly. Language is difficult, isn't it? It's easy to cherry pick a single word and completely miss someone's point, isn't it?

The problem is that words aren't inherently racist (ok, we can argue the n-word is inherently racist), it's the intentions behind the words that are racist. It's pretty obvious from my posting and even more from my lifestyle that I'm not a terribly racist person - which is why it's frustrating to watch people try and twist a single word of one of my posts and use it to try and argue that I am actually a racist. Of course it's possible to use any of these words in a racist context, just as it's possible to use them appropriately.

My "gut" feel (which isn't worth very much) is that labelling people as various colours of the rainbow is more divisive than using the geographic region where those aesthetics evolved. Most 'white' people wouldn't have a problem with being called Caucasian or European, Asian is a pretty well accepted term compared to "Yellow" or "Brown" and "Red" hasn't been acceptable for a Native American for decades. Generally, as time moves forward and we all gravitate to the more politically correct, it seems to be the colours we lose, not the geographical markers.

There's a pretty important distinction to make between genetics and culture - they're very different aspects of a person's identity, but both very much still part of that identity. When picking friends or employees I rely entirely on culture - are they interested in similar things to me? Will our opinions be able to co-exist? Can I understand the language they're speaking? When I'm talking to my Doctor, I'd probably want to lean more on my genetics than culture - what diseases am I more prone to? What allergies am I more likely to have? How can I stop my scalp falling off every time the sun comes out?
edit; fyi saying black people in our country is considered racist too "zwarte"
Again, words and intentions. Reducing the conversation down to a list of "allowed" words and phrases completely misses the point - describing difference isn't wrong, it's only treating people as inferior/superior based on those descriptions that's racist.

But anyway, yeah, if anyone has AFRO-TEXTURED hair they'd like to pamper, Diaspora Hair has got you covered.

The only thing you can hope for is that people don't want to be racist and then blame them if they do.
Whatever misconception they have could be down to just being at a different location or ironically WRONG race.

hey
I really don't care and didn't read any of it because I probably agree with it
I just said you shouldn't generalise black people into African/ African-American because there's plenty who aren't/don't want to be and talked about my mate because it made me think of him
you came horns blazing making this into an argument I don't care for/have had enough
and really just stop being condescending

if it's a case of misunderstanding and
"Have you ever run this little argument past one of the tens of millions of African-Americans who refer to themselves proudly as African every day of their lives or are you too short sighted to see past your own hastily-thrown-together opinion?"
was about hair, lol then stop caring so much because obviously we weren't talking about the same thing

I'm not sure if you noticed, but this started with a single sentence about me being happy about my girl's new business venture; since that point I've only responded to others. You came in to join the argument 3 pages late and then complain about me "making this into an argument". Do not try and make this out like I'm the one stretching the conversation out... I've only ever replied to you.

The "African American" point which you took issue with came up because nihilism said:
nihilism wrote:cause Africans stand for ppl that lives in Africa, not necessary black ppl
Which is clearly incorrect since tens of millions of Americans refer to themselves as African. I wasn't saying ALL black people call themselves African, merely that not all "Africans" live in Africa. I also wasn't arguing that EH or Charlize Theron as high-functioning members of an African nation aren't culturally "African", merely that their genetics aren't.

see that's the problem
I wasn't in your argument but you're trying to make it look like I was, I couldn't care less for your discussion
like wtf just read my post and read your response
YOU added me into the "dogpile" of course I complain wtf you think I'm doing I'm only replying to your bullshit
it's not about African American either what I'm saying (Cuba you know isn't America, but with your vast knowledge of countries and continents surely you must know this) its about everybody who's black is default African

god dsf, where anecdotes get into stupid arguments
the only thing that's arguable about my post or adding onto the discussion is "if those "proud" African Americans like to be called as such, good for their ignorance I would like to be called American if I were them" and that's just my point of view (ie the if I were them) and not really adding to the discussion either lol I took no issue with African American lol the only issue I have with that is that I see them as American and not African American because imho African American is just stupid as fuck
and if you start being a condescending little shit
"Congrats for eventually joining the dogpile, mIrReN but perhaps next time you could try and add your two spurts of moron-milk to the imbicility bukkake a couple of pages before everyone's been bored to tears?"
I'll sure as hell join the party

edit; fuck they're not even American they're just people

edit2; but this seems to be a very touchy subject to you lol, attacking people over (granted shit) jokes, but they're made in every thread about everything really,.... understandable because you were happy about your gf's venture
if I wanted to argue with you or wanted to discuss things would I really make a post like
"Have you ever run this point anywhere else in the world where there are black people? I have a mate from Cuba who get's called African all the time and I'm quite sure he isn't proud of being associated
also if I were you I wouldn't call him African too much
if those "proud" African Americans like to be called as such, good for their ignorance I would like to be called American if I were them "
c'mon :')
if you're now thinking yeah he's backing out
fuck mate I was never in your discussion and I'm done with this
+ I'm quite sure if we've talked about this IRL we wouldn't even be having this stupid whatever it is

What? The conversation had been going two pages before you posted... *quoting my discussion with nihilism*. If you couldn't care less about it why did you quote it and reply to it?!
it's not about African American either what I'm saying (Cuba you know isn't America, but with your vast knowledge of countries and continents surely you must know this) its about everybody who's black is default African
*bangs head against wall*
the only thing that's arguable about my post or adding onto the discussion is "if those "proud" African Americans like to be called as such, good for their ignorance I would like to be called American if I were them" and that's just my point of view (ie the if I were them) and not really adding to the discussion either lol I took no issue with African American lol the only issue I have with that is that I see them as American and not African American because imho African American is just stupid as fuck
Again, the only reason I brought "African-American" into it was in reply to nihilism suggesting that African *only* referred to people who currently live in Africa rather than being a fairly malleable adjective that could be ascribed to a thousand qualities that either reside or originated in Africa. The existence of tens of millions of self-defined African-Americans who don't have a problem with the word "African" showed that his assumption was short-sighted.

For some reason you hopped into the discussion a couple of pages in and tried to make a new argument from the ruins of the old one. It's embarrassing for everyone involved right now.

The only reason the phrase "African American" was brought into the conversation was to make a point (to nihilism, not you) that many things can be described as African for many different reasons and different parts of people's identities can be described using different terms, none of which have to be exclusive - it's perfectly possible to be both African and British or both German and Asian. Never did I say that all black people the world over should only be referred to as "African" as you seem to think I did by bringing Cuba into it - but that it's probably not terribly harmful to use the term "African Hair" when talking about products specifically aimed at a certain type of hair.
god dsf, where anecdotes get into stupid arguments
We agree. This place is fucking waste nowadays. I actually miss conversing with Alien Pimp.

2 things:

1.
mIrReN wrote:China has 1 Billion ppl Africa has not, some more dumb analogy needed? But thanks for letting me know it's a continent :o
Africa has more than a billion people

_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

2. There ARE black people that aren't from Africa, known as negritos. This is not the same as like African-Americans or whatever. Their ancestry is not African (unless you go really far back, but at that point, everyone is African), but they are black. They're from India, Thailand, Malaysia, etc.
