Interesting talking bass "phrases". Made any?

I'm getting a little burnt out on standard growl basses. The typical one-shot growl that quickly moves between two vowel shapes has been done to death by now, but what still catches my interest are the growls/mids that seem to speak an entire word or phrase.

An example would be at the 2:25 mark in this track:

Post any interesting mids that speak, and maybe even some hints at how you achieved it. Here's something I made a while ago(private SC link):

I can tell you i used massive and 3st complex wavetables (2st bend, 1st formant) for that sound. I'm using no internal effects in massive (more control that way). Only ableton native plugins were used, with the exception of Ozone Trash. Several parameters (wt-pos and eq primarily) are modulated with rack macro function simultaneously.

I see, thanks! Is there more than 1 eq used? I suck at getting proper eq curves for getting those kind of sounds, and when I start getting some vocal movement the sound is ruined (sounds too bad)

How do you approach setting the eq to get that kind of sound?

Look up what vowels are and then emulate it with the EQ. Don't overwork it, just find something that kind of works and build from that. Be gentle with distortion and build your sounds one step at a time. Be honest with your sound when sound designing -- only keep plugins/settings that actually improves it.

Best advice I can give you is: don't waste your time watching tutorials on youtube (they suck anyway), instead keep practising and keep trying new things/variations. Stick with it and you'll be making these sorts of sounds within a couple of months. I sound like one of those dumb motivational videos, but it worked for me (or, well you guys be the judge of that).

Yeah, I definately agree with you on the yt vids, its hard not knowing where to start, I mean, I read and read lots of people doing tutorials or explaining how this stuff works but when you try it yourself it never works out, you never get a good sound out of it and that's so demotivational.

About the vowel eq, I've tried some settings i've read on the growl and reese threads over here and checked out some formant tables on the net (including the vowel presets on live's eq8) but they just tear the sound apart, you lose a lot of the spectrum you know? You seem to know how to work the eq properly to get movement and not lose the frequencies, that's amazing, your sound design is on point.

Not just the growl but overall that clip sounds clean as fuck dude.
What drums are those, did you make them or sample them? Where did you get the samples in that case? Really don't know what it is, maybe it's just the arrangement but not even little clips like that, I never get them to sound like that.
It sounds 'professional' in some wierd way.

Imo the drums play a huuge role in getting a clean sound. Short, snappy kicks and snares are my favourites, and is what I usually make. I posted a bit yesterday about how I process my snares in this thread

Kicks aren't too different, a strong transient and short body is how I make my kicks aswell as the snares. Try downloading the drums I Iinked to in that other thread, and study them, how short the hits are, how the transients are etc...

I messed around with operator in ableton for about 15 minutes earlier this morning and I got a nice yigh sound going on..

What I have personally come across best is that it's easiest made through FM synthesis. Certain talking basses at least.

I used 4 osc, I think osc B was a saw 32 wave and the rest were sign. You get a similar effect with putting osc C as the saw but not both. I'm going to see if there's a pattern.. My guess is there is, like one with 1 saw, another with 1 square, yada yada.. Basically the key is to change the pitch of one oscillator as the volume of the osc that's being modulated peaks in an LFO, then you get that "yigh" sound.

Ok so I honestly think there is a fundamental point you guys are missing here...


Play your sweeping formant/vowel growl across a few different notes in key. Other method is to pitch bend your sound as the eq peaks/notches affect your sound. You'll also notice that more of the vowel/formant movement is accentuated more greatly depending on the range you utilize your fx in the freq spectrum.

...Ultimately you're touching on a more broad subject and that is composition. You're ultimately asking how to use a vowel/formant bass to create a phrase... Basic music theory should be able to show you how this is done in conjunction with sound design principles related to growls....

LOL. I realize the reese is the same melody as her vocals, I guess I meant any more thoughts on that particular reese sound and how they got the vowels/formants to almost match up perfectly.

I've made a simular bass in massive believe it or not. The FX chain was rather limited, and you can get a pretty close sound right outta massive. Also kinda sounds like a bass Emperor commonly uses. Send me a PM and ill try to give an example ina few weeks when im not as busy with school.
