i've seen some people who know a lot more than me about this kind of thing being kinda sceptical as to whether the quality will be as high as the originals and they're not just doing it to cash in on a fad. i guess it's all conjecture at this point but it's good they've finally realised the potential in reissuing them

From the look of it they're not trying to actually re-do them - rather, these will be new models that somehow "reference" the originals.
Either way though I'm glad to see Roland finally starting to come around, what with Korg runnin' shit the last couple years as far as new & novel products.
Which is good - recidivism for hipness' sake is bullshit, and the 808 & 303 became iconic almost accidentally because they were repurposed into centerpiece instruments by people outside Roland's intended market (long haired guitar noodlers at the time.)Our suspicion is that the TR-08 and TB-03 will turn out to be newly developed digital models rather than analogue reissues (the leaked TR-08 image, if genuine, at least shows that the unit will look significantly different to the 808). The video’s assertion that “musicians want new and exciting things so the time has come to take the next step” suggests we’re looking at an evolution of the TR-808 concept rather than an exact replica.

Wondering if the news will drive down the price of the x0b0x style clones.

There is a video Roland put out about this Aira

They do focus on the 808, but do you think its going to be a strict clone? Nothing even indicates itll be analog. Or a clone of any kind...might just be a groovebox in the TR line tradition.

I'll wait for the reviews. Even if it's a software controller with bespoke software, that could still be awesome if it's done right.
However I will be very excited if they are analogue - even if it does mean I'll have to buy a mixer to use the separate outputs...
Oh and the internet will declare Roland dead if they're not analogue.

Possibly slightly, unless they're analogue (of which i'm doubtful) when they will have a big impact. Saying that, i'm struggling to see the use in re-making the 303 if it's not analogue with all the synths we've had since. The sound is what made it a classic. I love the X0Xboxwub wrote:Wondering if the news will drive down the price of the x0b0x style clones.

If they do add any modifications, they need to at least add MIDI. The 808 did not have MIDI, the 909 did.
These guys are so late on the ball, it's not even funny. Maybe they noticed that Korg is kicking their ass. If they fail at this by making a glorified groovebox, I don't think that they will ever recover. Maybe they have been going for a different market these past few years, I don't know.
I'm a huge Roland fan by the way. The majority of my synths in my studio are Roland but they have seriously lost their way.

Re: so what do we all think of these 303 and 808 reissue rum
With all this Chinese analog washing ashore, I'm sure they could do it in analog, or some compromise at least. And yes Korg has been kicking them in the nuts. For like a long time. Think about the first ER's, the MS-2000, what has Roland released that is relevant since then? (fucking SP!'s haha, sitting blinking at me on my desk)
Re: so what do we all think of these 303 and 808 reissue rum
Seriously!! I think the SP is one of the only decent things that they have released in the past decade and it wasn't even as Roland, it was as Boss.
I borrowed the first SP back in the late '90's from a friend for a few months. The Boss SP-202. I made quite a few beats on that thing.

I just looked at their product line once again and it's not very inspiring.

I see that the SP series has been upgraded from Boss to Roland now.

The SP line is truly amazing. But again, it is like they assed into it. Just like, whoops! We've made an accidentally genre defining bit of gear again... HOW DO WE DO THAT?
Re: so what do we all think of these 303 and 808 reissue rum
Exactly - the best they can do to reverse engineer the magic is try NOT try. Either that or go back to marketing to guys with mullets and "tasty guitar chops" and let us figure out how to misuse their gear.nowaysj wrote:The SP line is truly amazing.
