You're like one of those people that trashes disclosure then bigs up Dusky if we're making house music comparisons to hip hop taste.
nah imo ukhh and american hh are different genres
And one is the 10 years behind the other and failing to do what was even done back then anyway.

I'm gonna be serious for a second here though. I dunno how annoyed everyone actually is at "bandwagon" house and techno, 5panellers or whatever but in the end I think love of music is a lot more powerful than any draw to appear in-the-know. People have always wanted to look a bit cool and I doubt it was any different back in the detroit techno/berlin techno/chicago house/london jungle/garage/dubstep eras people idiolize (myself included). I don't think too much hipsterism or boiler room or 5panel supreme caps or bashing disclosure listeners is actually poisoning anything, you know. The positive force of the music itself always completely erases any sort of politics around the shit. All the talk about "EDM is too cheesy", "130 is trying to hard to be road", "Juke is shit" or "Swamp81 is boring" doesn't matter once you're happy in a club with a drink in your hand or sitting on the bus with your headphones on. There is a certain core realness to music which all the internet cynicism in the world can't take away so it's all just jokes.

:w:

BTW I did some reading on NON and god damn is he a tnuc.
"At one time all was right with the world. It was lorded over by men who imposed their will by force. Women kept their mouths shut, underlings knew their place... In a once glorious past, woman was a creature without rights; a second class citizen... She was part cook, part whore, part servant and all child... Woman must be put in her place... These days the only way to restore balance between the sexes is by fear and pain... Rape is the act by which fear and pain are united in love... Now is the time to subjugate. Now is the time to dominate. Now is the time to rape. Let the RAPE commence. Go forth! Rise up! Rape, rape, rape!"
much edgy

Yeah it's kind of difficult to separate what he genuinely thinks and what he's saying to be a tnuc on purpose. Regardless of any of it I still rate some of his music as it works well in the style it's trying to do.

lol, yeah that's kinda the point I was trying to make. Nobody can take that for very long. I think the draw to listen to music you like is a lot stronger than the draw to be the coolest. People probably really like their swamp and are keen to show it off a bit. Maybe they should calm down a little, but it's coming from a good place.

I genuinely think people these days are a lot more shallow and so there are greater instances of people just being scenesters/bandwagoners. Back in the day it was a lot easier to be cool and edgy via pop music/culture and now the arse has dropped out of that there is a need to turn to the 'underground'. An 'underground' that has been increasingly commercialised since the early 90s, so much so that the underground is in fact just a re-branded facet of pop music/culture.

Is there really any kind of counter-culture any more? Will the youth stand up for anything coherently again or have they been beaten into conformity?

Yeah, won't deny this is something I also think/worry about Lazlo...

I suppose even something like rinse is just another product, just geared towards a smaller audience than rihanna or whatever... :(

What is there left to believe in though? Is the best thing we can do just to shrug and enjoy the tunes best we can?

Can't a bunch of kids just go out and set up an illegal rave for the fuck of it anymore? Or is that just proto-hipsterism, just fake coolness one step ahead of the pack?

I think that has a lot more with how much information the average youngster is fed because of the internet and the faster pace of technology, so less time is spent invested in any one thing. Everything is so instant and over exposed, I don't think they are anymore shallower than previous generations.

There is a book call The Rebel Sell, give that a read for some insight as to what happened there.

So basically we don't get the time to be fooled by the romantic idea of the hardcore jungle revolution (or the like) anymore?

We just cycle through every cultural "movement" as it immediately becomes a joke to put yourself above, if you follow me?

So what you're saying pedro, is that in *reality* it's all bullshit and we're right to just piss about with mans on road or whatever the ironic thing of the week is?

I guess you're making a joke on zomby there. He's definitely relevant to this discussion.

Like, the whole cult music aesthetic paints this picture of a counter-culture "english jungle mafia", the cult twitter posts pictures of roadmans in black hoodies on the estates and shit, all this stuff about "we will save you", even the name "cult". It's like a promise that this stuff people like me - who were never really a part of any of it - dream about is actually out there somewhere.

But then take into account the context, right? How counter-culture is it? He's just selling records and shirts on a commercial social networking site where he shares space with fucking pepsi and taylor swift. There's nothing unsafe about it, you know? It's just another well-packaged, slick product on the aisle.

Is the dream dead?
