Last November Deft graced the decks at Inflect with his signature yet eclectic style. We were first drawn to his music by his masterful grasp of the skittering Chicago footwork beat, which he also combines with influences from a multitude of other genres including hip hop and house. His productions take this melting pot, and stir in elements that can be hugely contrasting, but at the same time perfectly suited. With drums that can switch from light and wistful to hard and slamming, alongside intricate and emotive melodies which can give way to panicked alarms and heavy bass, his style is a veritable ying and yang of electronic music, providing tracks that can be equally suited to headphone listening and busy clubs all at once.
His set at Inflect perfectly encapsulated this varied style, as a journey that begins with deep, melodic house complete with involving percussion, switching up through the tempos via dubby pieces, hop hop grooves, low end jungle and frenetic footwork until reaching a frenzied 170BPM climax. We enjoyed it so much we thought it rude not to share.
His backcatalogue includes releases on Rwina Records, 2nd Drop, Hypercolour offshoot Space Hardware, Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood label, his most recent release, the “Voight Kampff” EP on Project Mooncircle, which we reviewed on our blog here: http://www.inflect-uk.com/post/60682756 ... -kampff-ep.
