All things Purple!

So I've gotten really into the new-style Purple Sound recently... Ganz specifically (that guy is a GOD of sound design) and Joker's newer stuff is taking an interesting spin on it as well, but pretty much anything from Terrorhythm these days is giving me a raging musical hard-on.

With that in mind (the music, not the hard-on), I felt it worthwhile to start a topic related to all things Purple; I'm really interesting in dabbling in writing some Purple beats but I can't get replicate their sound...

I gleaned that the pads are made with layered triangle waveforms but I just can't get that to sound right... I also know that low-passed reeses are usually a good staple and using some nice saturation plug-ins to get everything to sound warm is good, but has anyone got any tips or tricks for writing Purple sound tunes?

What is purple sound?

I'm no master on the subject (only just taking my GCPEs (General Certificate of Purp Education) on the matter, hoping to take an Undergraduate Degree in Purpology ) but I'll share with you what I know of Purple Sound...

"Purple Sound" is a loose definition for a style of Dubstep that you can create and it's typically categorised as such by a number of stylistic conventions the artist has applied to their tunes (haven't heard it in any genre other than Dubstep as of yet but I'm not a master on the subject - but trap is sort of associated) which was originally created and developed by Joker. It originally formed as a style when Joker started using really fat, wide, layered detuned saw basses alongside 808 drum kits (see below for Gully Brook Lane, what I would consider to be the first but again, I may be wrong)



At the time, I can imagine people went nuts as this was Dubstep but as people hadn't heard anything like it before. A small clique of artists (I know Ginz worked on some tunes with Joker but I can't immediately think of any artists working on Purple) have been perpetuating and evolving that sound for a while now and I've recently heard a few tunes by a guy that goes by the name of Ganz (not to be confused with Gantz) who writes more uplifting and interesting Purple Sound Dubstep; from my opinion of his music, he seems to be incorporating some of Joker's stylistic flair from his first Purple tunes but then developing it into his own unique style and I'm really feeling it (again, see below);

I'm just interested to know whether anyone else dabbles in the Purple style of Dubstep, I think it's interesting and, with the scene how it is, it's probably the most original thing coming out of Dubstep at the moment. I know that the sound design stuff I mentioned isn't critical in writing Purple, but it's certainly a large part of what has come before.

Any tips/tricks/production techniques that people would like to share?

Detuned triangle waves with plenty of glide, to give you that g-funk/Purple synth sound.

I love this style as well. BoeBoe is another Dutch artist with a similar sound.

I read in an interview with Ganz he often builds his tracks around a vocal sample. As good as the sound design is, I like the fact that this style concentrates more on writing good melodies and drum lines than noisy mid range bass. I recently bought the Korg Volca Bass and Keys. Fairly cheap and fun to work with. I know Joker uses saturated detuned square waves for his bass as well. I think he mentions in the video running it through a pre amp.
