Yeah, someone I know grabbed the 606 as well. And I'd bid the day before on the one that went for £360 with more postage costs, so it's not as bad as it could've been.

I went with this as my price guide - http://www.attackmagazine.com/features/ ... achines/4/

MONTREAL — To say that Quebec-based gear head René LeBlanc has developed a deep love for the intricacies of programming and patching the many units that make up his modular synthesizer would be an understatement. After losing his job as a sales associate for Canadian telecommunications giant Rogers, LeBlanc devoted nearly all of his time to programming the “patch of [his] life.”

Unlike many other synthesizers, LeBlanc’s modular set up does not allow him to save patches digitally once he has created something he likes.

“I just don’t like the way digital synths sound,” says LeBlanc.

“There’s just something very appealing to me about existing in that single moment; losing myself in sounds that no one has ever heard before and will likely never hear again.”

LeBlanc, who has been single since purchasing his first modular unit four years ago, believes he has logged roughly 8,760 hours tweaking patches to date, though has never recorded any of his “experiments.”

“I had invested two LSD trips and countless joints into this particular patch that I had been programming since November, 2012. I would leave my equipment on when I went to work and immediately return to it after getting home. The synth was never turned off, and the achievements I was making sonically with the patch were not of this world.”

On the night of May 12, 2013 however, LeBlanc lost everything during a thunderstorm of relatively average intensity.

“I was in the middle of re-patching a sine generator into an analog delay unit, then back into itself, then into the existing patch which was being arpeggiated by my sequencer, when I heard a tree branch coming down in the back yard,” he recounts.

“I quickly ran downstairs to the garage to grab the small generator I bought for these exact scenarios, but to my horror it was out of gas.”

LeBlanc then ran back up to his studio just in time to hear the last oscillation of six months of meaningless sound exploration.

“It was truly devastating, but like any modular synth user, I am equally excited to start plugging in new patches and seeing where my experimental intuition will take me.”

At press time, LeBlanc was tweaking the first parameter on a new patch that he believes will be equally important in his own life, despite the likeliness that its existence will again be rendered completely irrelevant upon the powering off of his equipment.

Program your own synthesiser modules

Software patching goes hardware! We are proud to present you Patchblocks, a modular synthesiser system where you decide what the modules do. You want a filter module? Turn your Patchblock into one. You want a crazy sounding bassline synth with built-in appregiator? Make it so. We provide you with an empty canvas, your imagination fills it.
http://patchblocks.com/about

What can I do with them?

A lot, it's really up to you. Plug some of your gear into it and use them as a sound processor if you want. Make an awesome noise box that produces pure digital filth. Let them play a concerto of chaos based algorithmic sequences. But also, don't forget to think outside the box! Because you can combine several Patchblocks, you can make them work together. One Patchblock could for example be used as an LFO (Low Frequency Oscillator) that you plug into another block to modulate processes that happen in there. Or you create a chain of effects. You can do this analogue, by connecting them with audio cables, or digital, by clicking them together directly.

René should go all analog, they'd power up right into the same configuration they were in before the power outage?

TBH sounds like most modular synth owners that I know.

Such Demo. Many Drums. So Diabloical Devices TR707. Much Fun.

Just 909, and the new 707. Shows how I/we do things 'live', and of course mainly to show off the new box. Never save anything anymore really.

I need a battery cover for it tho, my ocd wont allow it. Otherwise perfect, dont mind the missing knob, got millions of others.

Sounds like most producers, tbh. edit, to clarfy; if you replace 'recorded' with 'finished'

Sunk's MPK61 Mod Thread (with photos obviously)

Post by SunkLo » Thu Feb 13, 2014 6:32 pm

Been meaning to get these photos up for a while. I told Michael from MPCStuff that I'd nab some photos of the finished product with my friend's DSLR and send them to him (that's why there's a logo in some of them) Not affiliated with MPCStuff of course, just wanted to throw him some promo material in exchange for being a cool cat. My slider caps were out of stock when I ordered and he offered to ship the rest of my order and then send me the sliders when they came in, instead of making me wait. When the package showed up, there was an extra packet with the slider caps included. He managed to get his hands on some last minute and made sure I got my set on time with the rest of the order. So yeah biggups to their customer service, Mike's a pretty nice, accommodating guy.

I ordered a Fat Pad set in Carolina Blue, black knobs, black sliders, and a black button set. Kinda weak now that there's gonna be the MPK 261 released in a few months that fixes a lot of issues, but whatever. Everything was pretty simple to install. After unscrewing the billion screws on the bottom of the keyboard, you gotta pop the knobs off and take off the nuts that hold them to the faceplate. If the keyboard's facing you, right side up, you pull up on the back and slide the faceplate forward a bit until the front edge is free, and then flip it over towards the back. Careful not to yank on the ribbon cables at the rear. For the pads, you need to take off the sensors, including the brackets on either side so the ribbon cables aren't in the way. Not sure if the 49 and smaller keyboards have these brackets but my 61 did. Pretty simple to swap the pads and put the sensors back down. Pull the little rubber pegs through the sensor sheet holes, might have to pick at them with your fingernail until they pop through enough to grab em.

For the buttons, you gotta pull the PCBs out. As long as you're careful not to yank anything it's really simple. The buttons themselves are just a peg with two little pinch clips on either side. It's obvious which buttons go where, even without the front panel to look at. Just pinch the two wings holding the button in, snap in the fresh button, simple as that. Screw all the boards back in, make sure the screws holding down the ground wires are snug.

Just put in a few crucial screws on the backplate at the corners and midpoints, and test your pads. It's a pain in the ass to take out all those screws if the sensitivity still isn't to your liking. I ended up re-opening the case and putting one layer of tape on the backs. Pretty happy with the response now. More sensitive than I had gotten with the stock pads and loads of tape, and the fat pads feel a bit better to hit and are more reliable. I find they pick up feather touches well but also have an accurate velocity range. I can smack full 127 or lightly tap to get about 6. I might still try another second layer of tape and fuck with the sensor thresholds to try and get an even lighter touch but it's not a high priority. They're definitely far far into the realm of useability for someone with a really light touch like me.

Wasn't exactly sure before ordering how thick they'd be when installed. Let the record show they're "bout 3 pennies" thick.

The LEDs shine really bright through the smoked buttons. I wasn't too worried about that myself but if you're gonna want to perform on stage or something, the LEDs will still smack your eyes in the face.

That was supposed to be more about modding MPKs and MPCStuff, not just gear porn. Easier to pull up a thread when you're searching for MPK mods than trawl through to page 27 of the gear lust thread. Wuteva doe

@SunkLo: shit is sexy dude : ) Nice review of the effort/process to upgrade things. Hope you are digging on those Carolina Blue pads and they are all Feng Shui with you studio.

Got my AKG 702 headphones today. Not really listened to them yet, but goddamn they are the most comfortable headphones ever! Fit completely over my ears, really velvety pads and they don't mess with any of my piercings which is nice : ) Have always had an issue my piercings getting irritated after a few hours on headphones. Not a fan of the WAY too long straight cord that shipped with them, but AKG cords are easy enough to release.

This is the first thing my girlfriend saw when she brought the package in:

Haha. While its practical and I would expect comfort from more expensive cans...its kinda a marketing ploy am I right? OMG these cans feel so sexy...they must sound awesome : )

Yeah quite possibly. I'd attribute visual aesthetics to marketing a bit more than comfort though since you can't really tell how they'll feel till you've got them on your head. Easier to sell a sexy looking can than a sexy feeling can. It's also probably due to the fact that they're marketed to professionals meaning the users will be wearing them long periods all day. Nobody's gonna put up with a super uncomfortable headphone regardless of sound quality, so that could be really detrimental to an otherwise great headphone.

I think superb headphones won't be obtrusive in any way. Whether that's in terms of sound signature or comfort. When I use my ATH M50s, all I ever think is: "fuck these clamp my head and squish my ears." and "fuck these sound kinda hyped." My Senns just float around my head and apart from a rolloff in the deep bass, I don't notice any discrepancies in the frequency response. They're delicate in every possible way. I'd really like to try some HD600s and a few other upper tier models. I don't consider myself a fan of the AKG sound signature but I've only ever heard grainy low tier models. The 702s with maybe a high shelf cut might suit me well. Then there's the Fostex, Sony 7520, Focal Spirit Pro, Beyer 880s, etc... Time to play the lottery.

Thats a good point about visuals. Im taking a cue from the garment industry where the lining in a mens suit jacket or a leather jacket can have that effect. When the lining helps a garment slide on easily you feel like millions bucks.

Im not sure I would call my AKG240s grainy...but they werent up to par. Felt like I was missing a lot when I took them off and switched to monitors. I hope I didnt make a mistake going AKG again...but my first casual impression is that the 702s are a massive upgrade...sounds much much more like listening to speakers than any headphones I have ever owned.

Just bitching, but I'm getting so sick of working on monitors then cans then monitors, everytime I switch the mix is all wrong, snare disappears, kicks get huge, synth steps back... really wish I could just... make one mix, once. I'd stay in my dt's but I really don't find them comfortable. People say they're comfortable, I don't find them so. They're hot and sweaty, and they kind of clamp pretty hard, AND, I get the feeling like they're pressurized, like they seal so well to my head. After a while, I just get sick of the pressure. Really wish I had monitors I trusted, in a well treated, symmetrical room.
