Bass with no high end sitting well in mix? (yunx's sound)

Post by ArrenMog » Fri Feb 14, 2014 7:26 pm

Havn't been here in a while, not even sure how active anyone is here, but thought it was worth asking you guys. Basically in these tunes below, there is little to no content in the 500-1000Hz plus range yet it still sits so nicely in the mix and I have one question, how? Whenever I try to do something similar my tracks just sound so empty, sure you've got the hi hats to fill out the hi end, but the mid range is left feeling very hollow on the mix of the track as a whole. I can hear there may be a little hi end on these basses but I was wondering what kind of techniques these guys might be using to make what is essentially sub and drums sit so well in the mix?

Any input is welcome :)

There's almost always something there filling in those higher frequencies, like pads, reverse verb stuff etc. No real secret to it really

A long reverb on the snare helps fill things out.

You might be interested in the sub/low-midrange thread.

well i've noticed that the tunes yunx plays often sound a lot better in his mixes and then when i download them im a little disappointed because they sound kinda empty. so i think the premise of your question might be wrong, and they are emptier than they seem, but sound fuller because there's 2 or 3 songs playing at once. check out how different the new caspa tune sounds for example.

but anyway jonahmann and blinkesko both had good suggestions. i would try both of those. for example the tunes you posted also have vocals, pads, risers and shit like that, and lots of extra percussion to fill things out also.

haha was just about to post this, they compress the fuck out of the signal for radio. wish there was like some kind of plugin i could run my master through that compressed the signal to fuck and put it in a shit bit rate to simulate what it would sound like being played on rinse haha
