Student Discounts

Post by slim » Mon Oct 01, 2007 8:42 pm

If i'm a student at university, but am doing a course that has bugger all to do with music production, would i still be entitled to a student discount for Ableton Live? I have read the entitlement form through several times, but i don't think it says anything about it having to be used on your course.

Can anyone clarify? Any experience of buying any software in this way would be helpful, should be the same rule for all developers.

Cheers.

Student discount is student discount, bro. I don't think even the proper production courses have much to do with Ableton, it's a bit 'fringe' (being geared towards dance music)

student discount is cos youre a student, doesnt have to be related to your course

one thing to look out for some companies cut-off upgrade options with the student & educational versions
native instruments do it

its all to get you hooked, ie buy the program cheap now, get to know it, use and love it,
however long later the new version comes out (eg Live 7), by then you're not a student and despite having PAID for the software, you still have to pay full retail monies if you want Live 7
so whilst everyone else gets an upgrade price of £100, you'll be stuck for £400 if you want the next Live

Haha, well i'd hope that's not going to happen, I'm doing a 5 year medical course, so unless ableton are the laziest wastemen around, i should probably still be a student by then.

But if i try to upgrade 6 to 7 while a student will they still screw me over?

Cheers for clarifying that, i thought it might just be an academic thing.

Confirmed. They don't ask any questions, you just have to supply a photo of your student ID.

Really? How does that work?

its just that as a student you get the software discounted but you're not entitled to receive the upgrades and associated disocunts, so if you want the next version of the software you pay full retail price (or the student price again if youre still a student)

eg -
say you get software version 1 discounted now for £100

then version 2 comes out at full retail £300, student £200 and upgrade cost of £100

if youre no longer a student when version 2 is released then you will pay £300,
but everyone who bought the program full retail price first time round will be ale to buy the upgrade for only £100

hmmm.. thank kind of sucks. Ableton didn't make this situation clear to me when I bought Live 6 at student price.

Let me get it straight... Ableton does not sell upgrades to students? Or does my 'student' serial number block an attempt to upgrade?
