Maybe if you had to do such things, you'd politically stop them from happening? It's all well and good when the poor are shipped off to do this, yes?
It's coming though.
It's coming though.

Yes, next reading in the House Of Commons is 28th Feb. You can read the current draft of the bill here;Terpit wrote:lol is this real?

The one year national service doesn't automatically mean being drafted into the army, however;
So you get to pick which one you want to do.National Service Bill
2
(2) Regulations shall also provide that the scheme shall include—
(a) a residential element, requiring that participants live away from home;
and
(b) an element of public service, comprising one or more of the following to be chosen by the individual—
(i) charitable work,
(ii) social action,
(iii) care for the elderly or disabled,
(iv) overseas development activity, or
(v) work connected with the National Health Service, the emergency services or the Armed Forces
Also;
So free accomodation and travel for the year, and a guaranteed minimum wage for the duration. Also a 10% extra on personal tax allowance for life. So the low end threshold before you get taxed is raised by 10% for the rest of your working life.Pay and tax allowance for participants
(1) Participants in national service shall be paid the national adult minimum wage during their year of service with accommodation and travel funded by the
Secretary of State.
(2) Regulations shall provide that a person who has successfully completed their year of national service shall be presented with a national service certificate which shall entitle them to a lifetime income tax rate personal allowance 10 percent above the personal allowance that would otherwise apply.
Is it really that bad? The economy is still fucked, job market is fucked...this bill gives people their choice of paid employment (albeit minimum wage, but you're getting free accomodation & travel), plus you get a tax allowance for life.
If it was forcing people into the army, then fair enough. But it's not. That is one choice that people can make. You could choose a year doing 'overseas development activities' and basically getting paid to take a gap year somewhere.
Re: uk national service bill 2014

St John's Ambulance is a charity. If they're in the mix, you could potentially be getting paid to watch football matches and look after wreckheads at music festivals for a yearRiddles wrote:seems fine imo. would probably do it. (well, it would appear i would have to)

Replacing real paid jobs with min-wage ones or free labour is what this looks to me, which doesn't surprise me given the these twats recent form.

Re: uk national service bill 2014
If there was a real guaranteed job on a proper wage at the end of that year in them areas, then it would help but this would just prevents them positions being permanently filled and a conveyer belt of cheap labour with an incentive that is just insulting.

Re: uk national service bill 2014
This is fucking rartid man. So I'm supposed to take a year out of a job that I'm currently doing well in to go and do some whack shit for minimum wage and then just waltz back into work at the end of it, expecting nothing to have changed? Farcical.
Absolutely cannot see this getting passed though, and if it ever does, hopefully it's not before June 2016. Fortunately looks like it's being pushed by a bit of a joke of an MP.

Re: uk national service bill 2014
It will be the Tories answer to why all their fringe supporter's little lovelies have become unemployed statistics, they will tell you it will give the young and the unemployed a sense of achievement, that they are contributing to society and will be 'hard working people'.
The reality is that A4E and the likes are licking their lips at the chance to fuckoff all those who have workers rights and a wage that keeps a roof over their families heads.
If it was compulsary for everyone of adult working age to take part it would never get through.
ducking hell the new android auto correct is atrocious.

Do you believe in taxation as a concept?Pedro Sánchez wrote:Replacing real paid jobs with min-wage ones or free labour is what this looks to me, which doesn't surprise me given the these twats recent form.
This is a tax, payable in a year's labor.
I'd attach a poison pill to that 10% tax break though... like if it is ever repealed, the monarchy must be fully divested and the formerly royal family must pay 40 billion pounds in restitution.
Re: uk national service bill 2014
Seems exactly like the sort of thing they'd do tbf. Apparently the MP that is raising this was in classes with Farage. In fact, UKIP even campaigned on his behalf, and didn't put a competitor against him.m8son wrote:ukip would never do somethign like this
Basically, even the conservatives hate him, and every bill he tries to get passed is ridiculous and extreme. He's the guy behind the "Ban The Burka" bill and the bill that tries to make parent's legally responsible for crimes committed by their children.
Fuck this guy.
