Those pitch shifting algos are just off the shelf components that all the daws use, would be easy enough to plug the algo into the sampler.

This is true but I wonder about licensing fees.

The Ableton thing is more than just the tempo. Say I want to import a vocal phrase from a motown track. I throw it in the sampler, pitch it into key, but then if I want to stretch it tempo, it goes out of key. Or I have to throw it on an audio track, warp it into place without being able to trigger it from the sampler to try different rhythms, and then render it to a new file on my harddrive. I have to create a new file for every key of my keyboard if I want to be able to play it polyphonically without pulling it out of time. Even more files if I want to chop it up and have different parts stretched by differing amounts. Would be so much easier to have separate controls for tuning and stretching in the sampler and being able to dial in the keymapping for both separately.

I do indeed. I know Bud does too. One of the things about the sp-404sx - deliciously durty time/pitch shifting.

Sounds like normal behaviour for a sampler to me. I remember when I was using hardware samplers having to do stuff like that. Do you know of a sampler out there that will do what you are asking or is this a feature wishlist for something that you are making? Can you not chop it and pitch it using these controls?

I remember having to chop acapellas down to get them to fit.

Is this thing still going? If so maybe I'll work something up for next week. I've pretty much been dead the last couple months. Would be nice to get back into things again.

Geist does, Kontakt does. It's a super useful feature. Ableton's drum rack/sampler is so well integrated it's a shame that it's lacking this one crucial feature. People have been moaning about it for ages too, I'm really surprised they still haven't added it.

Yeah, I've never played around with Kontakt. I really should give it a try one of these days. The only Native Instruments vst I use is Reaktor. I think Ableton really did drop the ball with their sampler.
