Ohmicide vs. Trash 2
Hey guys, I need some help making up my mind here. I inquired about getting Ohmicide at Sweetwater and they said they don't carry Ohm Force plugins, but recommended Izotope Trash 2 as an alternative. My question to you guys is, what should I do? I downloaded the trial version of Ohmicide a few days ago (which expired waaaay too early for me to be able to really sink my teeth into it) and was pretty impressed with what it could do, albeit the short time the demo version worked before crapping out. I just looked up Trash 2 on Youtube and watched a few example videos and liked what I saw/heard. I don't know which one would be better for dubstep though, and that is where I need some help from people who may have worked with either of these plugins. I'm looking to get some nice distorted basses, growls, saturated mid-range basses like Zedd uses and the like. Which one would you go for? Ohmicide seems to be the go-to multiband distortion plugin for dubstep from what I have seen, am I wrong in assuming this? Trash 2 seems like it could offer the same, if not more, options as far as multiband distortion goes... Does it? I'm not looking for amp modeling or anything like that, mostly just thick, versatile distortion that can shape basses nicely and add some grit where it is needed, thicken sounds, etc... Any info or suggestions or help of any kind in this decision would be extremely appreciated! Thanks a lot guys.

Re: Ohmicide vs. Trash 2
trash 2 is better imho, cleaner but can get rougher + more sensible results & more flexible since you can shape it how u want.
ohmicide has an annoying gui and sounds too digital for me.

Agreed, I always found that Ohmicide was too heavy handed and I disliked the GUI.sunny_b_uk wrote:trash 2 is better imho, cleaner but can get rougher + more sensible results & more flexible since you can shape it how u want.

I prefer Trash and I especially like using multiple intances to layer distortion in smaller amounts.
Apparently Noisia use Trash too, if thats your thing:

Re: Ohmicide vs. Trash 2
I've always been curious about trash, but have never actually tried it. I currently use camel phat, fabfilter Saturn, and sound toys decapitator and between those 3, stuff sounds pretty amazing. Is there anything trash does especially well that I wouldn't be able to get out the aforementioned plugs? Thanks

Re: Ohmicide vs. Trash 2
Trash2 is more than a distortion plugin, it's go some great functions. A Convolution Module you can load your own sounds into which is awesome.
Flexible Routing options which are handy.
Great Textures & Presented Sound Options.
Visual Representation.
Man its more like a bundle plugin, like Alloy; you get a lot of cool functionality with some seriously useful sounds.

Thanks so much guys! the stuff you have been saying is very helpful to me. Really appreciate the feedback! Sounds like Trash 2 is the way to go. That convolution feature sounds pretty interesting too, would love to experiment with that.

They both have their own character of distortion and are both really powerful. But I think trash is easier to use and if I had to choose between both I'd go with that. The distortion section and cab emulations are awesome

Re: Ohmicide vs. Trash 2
I tried Ohmicide because I saw in an interview Skrillex uses it. The reason not being because I'm in love with Skrillex, but it's like if Hulk Hogan saying he used Gillette razors. Like Hulk Hogans sweet mustache, Skrillex has some pretty sweet sounds. I tried Ohmicide and found it confusing, and I didn't even like the sounds. I've not used Trash though, but it can't be worse than Ohmicide.

Re: Ohmicide vs. Trash 2
Look, just because the gain dials in Ohmicide go over 9000 doesn't mean you have to crank them. I usually stack two or three of them with light gain each time, and only applied to certain frequencies. It can give you some absolute killer sounds, but you have to be careful with it. It's harder to use than a lot of other plugins. I never much liked Trash (havent tried Trash 2 though), I always end up with really muddy sounds.
To each his own I guess, but my point is that Ohmicide is absolutely not a 'bad' plugin like some of these people make it out to be. It's just harder to master.

Re: Ohmicide vs. Trash 2
I have both Ohmicide and Trash 2 and I can honestly say Trash 2 is my preference. It's easier to use visually and it's definitely the most powerful of the 2. You can use it in single or multiband mode. You can apply 2 different distortion types to each of the 4 bands (...and u also get a dedicated 2 band shelving filter on each band to help sculpt the sound. If you want you can even easily draw in your own distortion in the waveshaper if u want to really experiment....and that's JUST the distortion module in Trash 2. Trash 2 is an entire suite that specializes in distortion...much like IZotope Ozone 5 does as a mastering suite.
Beyond the Trash module (Distortion) you have 2 seperate parametric filter/EQ modules that can run in either parallel or sequence. The 2 filters have MANY filter types to choose from, even vowel filters, that can be modulated by there own seperate LFO/envelope including LFO & envelope modulation options.
You have a Dynamics module that has both a gate and compressor. The compressor can be single or multiband. The compressor does have sidechain and a detection filter capabilities.
You have a Convolve module that morphs your sound into anything from basic microphones, amps, and cabinets to wild out of this world things like a "cats throat".
Finally you have a Delay module with multiple delay types to choose from. Tape, Tube, Saturated, Transistor Radio...
Such a powerful plugin. The best part is you can go as deep or as simple as u want and it won't overwhelm you. The GUI makes it extremely efficient to use with lots of dynamic visual aid to help u. The interface follows the same format as ozone 5. The filters/EQ are identical to ozone's in functionality....except Trash also gives u modulation options and many filter types.
Ohmicides GUI is hard for me to work with.
I think they're both good at what they do...matter of preference really. But in my opinion Trash wins in all areas.

Re: Ohmicide vs. Trash 2
Trash 2 also has its own "history" memory so u can undo/redo any tweaks u make. Forgot to mention this....it's a GREAT feature that's often overlooked. Most 3rd party plugins don't allow you to undo your adjustments at all. U can even save 4 specific "history" points for comparison. History defaults to 50 undo's but it can be set to over 500.

Haha, I like the honesty. Skrillex uses it...it must be awesome. I tried to learn Ohmicide but hated navigating through it and I never really learned how to use it. I just hated using it. I would open it up and be like...WTF am I looking at? Call me lazy, but I want to open up a plugin and be able to use it, not sit there for hours figuring out where the controls are. All of Ohm Force's stuff is like that...I hate all of the GUIs.DrVinnyBoomBeats wrote:I tried Ohmicide because I saw in an interview Skrillex uses it. Trash2 is completely opposite. When you open it up, it just logically flows and you can sit there an play with the plugin and not have to sit and learn where all of the functions are buried. I love how it is a bundle plugin where you can pop it on after a synth and EQ, distort, compress, and limit all in one. Also...multiband anything is awesome. Definitely loving trash 2 for the ease of use and for the huge fat farting noises I can get out of it.

Re: Ohmicide vs. Trash 2
I find it funny how ppl assume artists like Noisia and Skrillex only use Ohmicide. It's some brilliant marketing by Ohmforce. In every interview I've read about Skrillex talking about distortion he mentions Trash 2.
In his own words "I use Trash 2. It's a absolutely crazy multiband distortion/waveshaper. I also use Ohmicide"
Once again I'm not bashing Ohmicide. Its a sick multiband distortion. Just quoting fact.
Lol

Re: Ohmicide vs. Trash 2
Do not overlook the EQ/filter modules in trash for modulation purposes.
Here's a short vid KDrew uploaded showing off a dubstep bass he made using Trash 2 distortion and filter modulation. He's using 1 of the vowel filters.

Re: Ohmicide vs. Trash 2
I use both for different things, but if I had to choose, trash 2 easily
for the cost, trash 2 is just so much more for not that much more $. you get so much control with trash

Re: Ohmicide vs. Trash 2
Tbh, Ohm sounds way 'rawer' in a way that I guess is useful sometimes, but Trash2 is way more versatile. I dont like the way ohmicide works either, annoying interface and I dont end up using it alot. If you have a choice get trash 2!
Whenever I want to distort something I end up using trash and not Ohmicide.

Re: Ohmicide vs. Trash 2
Ohmicide, is well... more of an art. I'm convinced I can get dirtier, rawer, monster sounds out of Ohmicide, and can also get really weird/different distortions out of it that I can't with Trash, but it just takes much more time.
The one thing I do really like about it though, is that because it is multiband and rather easy to split off, I can use it to touch up a sound that needs a lil more ooomph at 400hz, for example. I would get a Trash trial if I was you. Try them both out, and get saturn while you're at it and try that. Cos I would say Trash is more of a one button wonder, but I would also say Trash is a bit like using a sledgehammer to crack a nut and Ohmicide is more of a... subtle beast. There is such thing way too much distortion.

Are you reading ohm? Your UI's are balls and you're loosing market share because of it. Hire a professional.
