Skrillex - Recess (what happened?)
Skrillex - Recess (what happened?)
So after a long period of silence, Skrillex has sprung his LP, Recess, upon the world. As a huge Skrillex fan myself, I couldn't wait to hear it.
But then I listen, and all I can really think is... what the hell happened?
Now don't get me wrong, I'm all for innovation. I wasn't expecting a rinse and repeat of Scary Monsters or something like that. But on the new album, it's all pretty much unrecognisable as Skrillex, and not in a good way. Most of it comes across to me as either boring or just plain weird.
Ragga Bomb wasn't bad and the first half of All is Fair was OK, but nowhere near as well executed as his earlier stuff IMO.
But what do you guys think? Maybe I'm being closed minded here, but it seems like he's gotten a bit too experimental and ditched pretty much everything that I and many others loved about him as a producer. Thoughts?

yeah that's pretty much the vibe I got.enjarcher wrote:boring
Re: Skrillex - Recess (what happened?)
wouldn't exactly call that piece experimental.
listened to it, didn't hate it for the most part and this surprised my quite a bit.
however, it's just as insubstantial and meaningless as his previous efforts. just less annoying.

Re: Skrillex - Recess (what happened?)
tbh i was hoping for an album full of tunes that sound like try it out
Re: Skrillex - Recess (what happened?)
that tune with CL and G Dragon is jokes man. plenty of brostep to keep all the broheads occupied surely?
Re: Skrillex - Recess (what happened?)
much less annoying imho. I'm guite indifferent to this one.particle-jim wrote:his old stuff was shit, this is also shit but in a different way

Its not bad, its just a different vibe to maybe what you wanted. I keep hoping he will make more tracks like "With you friends" (Original mix) or "Make things for smile". But i think i will be waiting a long time. I do get what you mean about it being a very unfamiliar sound, i havent heard anything on it that reminds me of his signature sound, maybe the high end of a snare drum. But idc, i think its really good for what it is and in a few weeks ill probably learn to love it!

swear the 'future garage' tune on it could be good without the disgusting anime sounding vocal

If you held a gun to my head and forced me to pick one tune off this shitheap to play in a set, itd probably be fuck that. kinda woz my nu leng bristoly vibe to it, but not as good as anything actually from that scene. second drop ruins any potential the tune had, just goes into second rate halfstep shit, if hed have stuck to 4/4 itd have been a pretty good little choon.
Re: Skrillex - Recess (what happened?)
Ok, didn't realise this was an album so thought I'd give it a listen...
All Is Fair in Love and Brostep - Generic brostep, but I kinda think that's the point with the cheeky track name. Ragga Twin vocals do not suit that processing IMO.
Recess - Actually quite fun from the intro and the upbeat sample. Slower pace suits the sounds used, that warbly voice that I think is Michael Angelakos isn't bad. The Fatman scoop bits are a laugh, seems like the whole tune is made for a live show somewhere with the vocalists jumping around.
Stranger - Not a fan of whiny Dutch house synths, but this isn't that obnoxious. Can imagine it hurting my ears on a big system though.
Try It Out (Neon mix) - More brostep. Not my sort of thing.
Coast Is Clear - Not actually bad. First tune I've made it all the way through. Got an almost Gnarls Barkley vibe about it. I'd go so far to say I actually quite like this one.
Dirty Vibe - Can really hear the Diplo influences on this one. Drum programming is quite interesting but found the hook and vocals a little annoying and lacking any real substance. Seems like it was written for Diplo's sets more than anything else.
Ragga Bomb - Again, the Ragga Twins are not Daft Punk and shouldn't be allowed anywhere near vocoders or ring modulators. This is just an extension of the other track with them on it, nothing new or exciting. Pretty horrible in fact this one.
Doompy Poomp - Stupid name, for a start. Interesting tune, he's definintely trying something different even though I have no idea what this is. Sounds like he's gone out for a cigarette and left the studio assistant fiddling around with Ableton Simpler. Appreciate the crunchy almost hip hop vibe of things, but this just sounds like a messy sound palette that hasn't really worked.
Fuck That - Less bro than the previous out and out dancefloor tracks, this isn't bad as a rhythm drive piece and DARE I FUCKING SAY IT can see it working as a DJ tool for EDM warmup people worth their salt. Not obnoxious in any way. Second favourite on the album so far.
Ease My Mind - Never listened to Niki & The Dove as it never struck me as the sort of thing I'd be interested in. Her vocals aren't too bad, but I think Florence Welch has kinda killed it for indie chicks attempting dance music as they'll never really measure up. Ahhh this was promising at the start but the Eastern influenced bro stomp fest just ruins it. Terrible dirge, not liking this.
Fire Away - Kid Harpoon I'm not familiar with, but I like the shuffly beat on this, sounds almost future garage-y if I'm being honest. Floaty melody is nice, vocal suits it, beats have got some rhythm to them. Again, something that would fit an EDM/commercial warmup set quite nicely.
Overall, not as entirely terrible as people are making out. Three tracks (Fire Away, Fuck That and Coast Is Clear) I made it all the way through and if they came on again I wouldn't immediately dive to turn them off. The rest of them aren't my thing, but then again I'm not really the target audience for this, and I can only see myself being a couple of places where I'm likely to come into contact with the aggier tracks anyway.

fire away is kinda nice. respect for trying different things
Re: Skrillex - Recess (what happened?)
'Fuck That' ain't bad either. reminds me of FUYS. that pre-bro ghetto vocal vibe
Re: Skrillex - Recess (what happened?)
Sometimes I almost feel bad for Skrizzulz until I remember that he's probably getting head from a whole squad of EDM® bimbos as we speak.
