Is Windows 8 any good, or are there major issues?

Big plus for my laptop. Wakes like an ipad. Love it.

Have not used it with a pro audio i/o. Sometimes there are sleep issues with their drivers. Can't say.

I use 8. When I boot once a month, I just go to the desktop, and I'm in 7 without a start menu. Shutting down... yeah, you'll have to google it.

There are real complaints with this os, but it is what it is. I've got 8 on a laptop and am thinking of taking my production pc to 7, only because of driver availability for my audio i/0, otherwise, i'd probably just go with 8.1.

Shutting down is no different from 7, you just right click the start menu in stead of left click

I have been using Windows 8 for a few months now, I find it faster then Windows 7, maybe it's just a placebo effect?, the whole user experience is also smooth ...but it's just me.

its not a placebo effect, look at some benchmarks and you'll see windows 8 is actually a fair bit more efficient than windows 7, obviously being built for slower hardware means the OS itself takes up far less RAM and CPU while idling.

I've stuck with 7 just due to compatibility issues and the metro interface. If all my hardware and older games were supported I'd probably change over though.

98 SE or XP Pro for a desktop are perfectly acceptable. Windows 2000 Pro only ever looked good because the alternative was Windows ME. I still have to work with the server version surprisingly frequently and I honestly prefer it when I find NT4! Gash.

Ha! Was just about to say: "Beats Windows ME". It's not that bad. IMO beats Windows 8. 2000 was pretty straight to the point. No crazy transitions, no ridiculous hidden functions (within nerd reasoning), just a plain simple interface.

I'm still using Win 7 because of the compatibility and how its as good as XP, but IMO 8 has finally caught on because people gave in to Microsoft. On top of that, most people don't know how to reformat their new laptops and desktops they bought from BestBuy so they just dealt with it.

I used WIndows 8 for about a month and a half just to see if it was another "Windows XP is amazing so why would I switch over to 7?" scenario, but I just couldn't deal with how gimped the system felt. On top of that, a lot of my older games weren't compatible with the OS (or they required a million workarounds). I think within time, Microsoft may release a wider variety of GUI's and patch a lot of compatibility issues with legacy software for Windows 8, but until then, I am content with Windows 7.

Thats a narrow minded view of the reasons I listed. Its a matter of taste on how I feel a desktop OS should feel like as well as the amount of issues that was brought up when using older software. If you like playing Battlefield 4 and using the latest iteration of Office than 8 is perfect for you. But if you still have a ton of old software that you like to reverse engineer, exploit, gain administrative rights through backdoors within a lab environment, play older games that dont always require a million workarounds, and test networking applications that were designed for 7 and earlier as well as various Linux OS' s, than 8 is less than ideal.

If anything I tolerate change a lot better than the next man, but I still have the smarts to recognize when something is a solid piece of work, regardless of age.

As for Microsoft supporting old software, it gets to a point when they shouldn't bother imo. They make no promises to make sure your 10 year old software works on their latest OS and they shouldn't.

Well first, I am definitely not a leet hax0r, I am an ambitious student who has been practicing his applied experience with his continuous educational experience. And I agree to some extent that there should be a cutoff point where they no longer support some software. But because there is this cutoff point, it has left some of who has different uses for their PC in the dust. But I am content with that. I waited through Vista and I can certainly wait through 8.

you think microsoft will revert to more of a windows 7 approach in the future? I doubt it, why would they? They've invested in unifying their platform to an extent, i doubt they will scrap it.

I have strong feeling they will release something similar to 7 with Windows 8 touches as well. Unfortunately I dont have much of an argument to back this statement up other than sort of a crack pot theory and a gut feeling. Even if they were to stick with this environment, than I will be forced to eventually use the latest OS and use a 3rd party interface and keep a seperate drive with 7 in my build.

Everybody I've met in person gripes about 8. Still. Like when was it released? Nobody likes it at all.
