Making a growl bass sound from live recorded sound?

Hey everyone
Let's say I were to record some guitar or cello live...

And I want to give that instrument a growl bass tone

What effects plugins and vst's would I use to do it?

I imigine it would be the same as making a growl bass from a clean synth...

Basically I'm thinking i would add some distortion.... And a deep octave layer of it... And a vocoder maybe

Am I missing anything? How would you guys go about taking a clean recorded guitar or cello loop and making it into a growl bass

My only concern with this would be how you would keep the notes on key and still pitch bend(because that's what makes growls sound good) but as far as the FX go... I would say do all the same technique and setup of a normal growl and go from there. I think this is a brilliant idea sir!

It wouldn't be too hard to do quick sliding up and down notes on a guitar and cello and then automate the volume in my DAW to really give it the womp effect

I guess what I really am wondering is how do I take a clean guitar or cello sound that is live recorded (not midi) and make the tone to sound similar to a growl dubstep bass?

Anyone who's wondering I tried doing this yesterday by taking a cello loop and putting on it the following effects:
Distortion
Resonant lo pass filter
Vocoder
Bit crusher (down sampler)

Is there anything I am missing?? I still wasn't really able to achieve the desired effect.... Maybe it's just cuz my vocoder plugin isn't too good
