experimental

Post by phrex » Wed Apr 02, 2014 4:54 pm

there is probably already such a thread. but i can't find it unfortunatly :|

anyway: any ninjas out there doing not just experimental music but combining it with visual art or performances or (and especially) installations?

my latest work was to musick 'bridges-go-round'. an experimental film about birdges. the filmmaker fiddled around with a lot of filters and cutting and fading the film tapes. also it was notably one of the first pieces of experimental music done for an experimental film.

here you have two versions: first one is an experimental jazz thing, second one was one is one of the earliest electronic piece of music that went with an experimental film. (both versions are in this video)

and now this is my version of this - made it more static & minimalistic - combining the very straight architechture with the straight C minor Chord. the change of colors and feel of tempo in the movie are symbolized by the 303.

any other ninjas digging the experimental side of music/sound/film?

too arty? there are plenty of threads you can rant around. no love for 'art-bashing'.
and no i'm not a hipster.

Been listening to a little bit of microtonal music and musique concrete lately. Is that what you mean with this thread? Or is it more about the idea of combining the visual and audible senses with works of art?

don't care much for the visual side of things tbh - probably because i could never get into art house stuff

i do like some the more experimental industrial w/e you wanna call it stuff coming out atm on mira, downwards, blackest ever black, death of rave, diagonal, subtext, modern love, submit, violet poison etc cause it kinda joins the dots between loads of things i am/was at some point into. reignited my interest in certain things as well. but tbh i got this love/hate relation with these things because a part of me thinks they're chinstroke art house hipster material; so i just get the music and avoid reading articles and interviews. no art bashing, just not really into that side of things - so interviews or w/e with dudes talking about how sound and architecture should mix more are a bit off putting for me

Well I was just going off what you did with that film tbh, but fair play.
This is what I've been listening to I guess.

ah nice one.
next installation i'm doing will be with acetate, record player, max MSP patch and a nice setting.
bit too early to chat about details but i'll keep you posted.

what sort of installations are you thinking of?

Innit!
See, this is what I meant when I said you should distance yourself from drugs lol. Perhaps not all use, but you go IN with it man. I think there's a clear dissociation between your personality in respect to and from them.

Vulva, how long have you been on max MSP? have you put out anything you've made with it yet? I'm looking to get more into programming stuff and was wondering if that's a good place to start.
In attempt to refrain from bastardizing this thread any further, here's some mildly relevant stuff I've seen being made with max. The software is/was free here

Yeah, thats cool, vulva

Mine will deffo involve max but im not really sure what yet, only chose the module like last week so im not sure where we can go with it

i wanna do sumut dark

I'd like to do something with light as a main aspect. Maybe like someone screaming for help n shit on a broken phone/radio, lots of cutting in and out, loss of signal, and lots of stutter - and then the waveform could affect the lighting

so just really on-off and noisy

also have to make it a bit interactive i think

re OP
liked both versions
first reminded me of The Nice's Five Bridges Suite from around 1970
with that Big Apple sax thing
and the second's visuals were more engaging & music more brooding
good stuff

Also, i've got artists booked who have releases on all 4 of those labels :3

favourites from mira would be covered in sand (aka shifted), not to mention vatican shadow's remix of "heavens gate suicides"; and burma camp (side project of the guy in the kvb)

newer downwards stuff, i'd go with oake. "tenoun rah zan" from the the halha compilation is my fave. kerridge is sick as well

modern love are killing atm for me. millie & andrea's album is the best thing i've heard in a while. + all other miles aliases and projects (miles, demdike stare etc). reiner veil are worth checking out too.

submit only has 2 releases so far afaik. perc's einsturzende neubaten remix ep is alright, but i recommend the feral grind compilation more. loads of sick tunes on that. my favourite from it is proligate's "swarm", but there's also tunes from prostitutes, pete swanson, bleaching agent, burial hex etc

Defo used to do way way more stuff like this, have been drawn to pop though, trying to kludge like more experimental, or maybe nontraditional sounds into a pop beat kind of context. Can't say I've been successful, but that is what I'm doing now.

These are like the last purely fucked up things I've done.

Soundcloud

Soundcloud

I'm doing stuff that is fucked up, but more beat oriented, but like really broken beats, like beats that break within the measure.

Soundcloud
Stop that one around 2:10, just an inside joke at after that.

Soundcloud

I wonder who's listening to this stuff? Like those first two tracks have 4.5k listens. Who listens to that kind of stuff on SC?

Over the past few months I've written a number of tracks in 6/4 and built them like 4/4, gives a nice groove because of the triplets and default swing.

Here's one:
Soundcloud

Tried to be more experimental on this one by sampling and granualizing myself on guitar and doing the same for some of the percussion. Also made the bassdrum on it.
It's a little repetitive, but I kinda like it.
