I read it as chemical records new dubstep, but I wouldn't be suprised if every c*nt and his dog had a go at pissing all over the toilet seat before too long. A shame but still. Remember Everything but the Girl..
Hope that doesn't happen for a long time if at all!

nah man nothing to do with shabby - on the contrary it was too smooth and coffee table wet. Each to their own but not my thing.elgato wrote:i didnt hear much of their stuff but from what i have heard i thought they did alright...i love that photek remix of single...KION wrote:Remember Everything but the Girl..
did they do other shabby stuff to which you refer?

hmm yeh
i find this a difficult one. Cos it seems to me its only 'coffee table' because it fits the image certain businesses/groups want. Obviously, as you say horses for courses etc (i dont mind it smooth as well as rough), but i find the words coffee table a bit unfair cos its not the music itself which is at fault (unless it purposefully went in with the intention of pushing for a particular audience). It implies 'sellout' or watered down, and i dont think thats true in cases like this. Ive heard ppl call horsepower 'wine bar' music before
do you reckon im being daft?

horsepower did sort of have that angle to them, i can see where ppl are coming from there. it was much less work than, say, loefah stuff for example...
what did FWD heads think of that vocal trip-hop loungey-jazz-with-a-bassline thing that Mala played? I was pretty shocked, its sort of seductive at first but then I realised we're in Plasticpeople not Bristol and it's 2006 not 1996

in answer to Elgato's 'why', well ebtg were a watered down act when placed in the jungle mixer (amongst all the other mixes they had done), thats why. Local Radio friendly. Not a good or bad thing, just not my taste at all (my mum liked em tho!)
And I've nothing against vocals being used in general, in fact I'm for it, if done right.

I definately reckon that some horsepower would sound good in a wine bar, but it also sounds extremely good on a fat system in a darkened club...and thats kinda my point, to call something coffee house or wine bar or whatever cheapens the music and dismisses it on a bit of a narrow basis. But ive got no problem with someone saying they like it rough 100% of the time, its just those words that piss me off a little
im intrigued by this loungey jazz thing to which you refer, it might be the same thing which started off the thread "Jazz" which is down the page somewhere. people seemed to like the idea from what i remember

i think it depends how you see it, to take on the alcohol analogy- is it watered down or mixed?...just weaker beer/spirit, or something which isnt what it was but is now something different (e.g. a cocktail). Ok that was a silly analogy, sorry.
So it had a vocal, and it had organs etc, and these happen to appeal to a wider audience, but i dont know whether that means you can say 100% it was objectively watered down
But maybe thats not what you're saying

But thats gettin it a bit twisted. I wasn't referring to Horsepower. Some music is done with truth and honesty, and if it sounds good both in a club or wine bar all the better.

Sorry, the horsepower thing wasnt in direct response to you (not meant antagonistically, its hard to sound neutral in discussion on the internet!)
But this is it, i dont know how we can be sure that everything but the girl went into it thinking yeh we're gonna jack this style and make it for the charts (i doubt photek did). Its the same process ('true' sound
'friendlier' sound) its just the intentions being placing on it. That tune i mentioned at the start doesnt make me want to rave particularly hard, but then neither does most photek, some 4hero, some reprazent etc etc. And i wouldnt call 4hero watered down, i doubt many would, they were taking it in a new direction. Fair enough if you dont enjoy that style that much for whatever reason, its just deriding it with certain language that gets me a little. What do you reckon?
(im mostly trying out thoughts and ideas, im not trying to say im right)

I dont see the point in purposefully radio-friendly dubstep, and in fact am well against ppl intentionally doing that. But if someone makes a tune that is creative and heavy, and it happens to have a sound that can appeal to other ppl then ill be happy to see new influences and directions, regardless
Well that goes without saying, and btw ebtg were purposefully radio-friendly so that pretty much ties it up.
And also Elgato - I never said I didn't like the music of 4hero, photek, etc, and I never said they were watered down. I still play Photek Hidden Camera (vinyl) as its so fkin great. I don't know how you've made that connection.
And I'll say it again (the last time I mention them as an example!). ebtg were watered down radio-friendly pappy egg and milk sops music for housewives on the way to Tescos after dropping off the kids to aunty Maudeline, who will ask to borrow that cd again for the 3rd time the cheeky mare.

Alright matron calm yourself i thought i said enough times i wasnt sparring for a fight it was just discussion, i was just trying to work through some ideas
The fact (if its possible to establish with certainty) that they were intentionally shooting for the charts with their ventures into a jungle sound does change things and calling them coffee table or whatever is then a different thing. You didnt state that that was definite fact anytime before
The reason i brought those artists in is because i was trying to draw a comparison in that (for example) 4hero brought in a jazzy, less rough (some might say 'loungey') sound for two pages (and my mum likes them), but does it make them any less worthy of praise, or worthy of the derisory moniker 'coffee table'...no, because of intentions, and stature. So until you said that its established fact that ebtg were openly aiming for success, i had a problem with the inconsistency of apparently treating the two differently in an intelectual sense (you can have your tastes anyway you like, arbitrary or not, but its different when you try to paint some kind of objective basis for it). The fact you affirmed that you rate those artists and see them differently to what we've been talking about if anything strengthens what i was saying
