Re: The Warp Curse - When good artists go backwards
It's trying to do the Sun Ra vibe but just lacking the intensity. it' just spends too much time being spacey without the weird composition and playing technique to go with it
Re: The Warp Curse - When good artists go backwards
there's no sun ra in flylo
taters on that as we jack it

Post some sun ra, so I can better get what you mean?

Re: The Warp Curse - When good artists go backwards
I do like some Flylo and the last set I saw from him was good but the attempts at being all spacey and shit often don't work too well.
Re: The Warp Curse - When good artists go backwards
Most obvious choice but a good example for that reasonjesslem wrote:Post some sun ra, so I can better get what you mean?

Re: The Warp Curse - When good artists go backwards
I think Flylo is more specifically into this vibe though

Only binding factor is Jazz imo.

Re: The Warp Curse - When good artists go backwards
Look into Sun Ra in general though and it'll make a little more sense regarding what Sun Ra talks about both outside of and in his music.

That's just speculation though isn't it?

Re: The Warp Curse - When good artists go backwards
no thats fair sun ra is rather mystical and it's highly conceptual music so it's more established territorry to 'steal' from compared with other stuff. another example could be funcadelic or bootsiejesslem wrote:That's just speculation though isn't it?
but it's not a problem for listeners when his stuff sounds like madlib and that is a bit hypocritical

Re: The Warp Curse - When good artists go backwards
Don't listen to madlib, and wouldn't say I'm a particularly avid flylo listener either tbf.

Re: The Warp Curse - When good artists go backwards
Yeah I'm not saying he's trying to be like Sun Ra but there's definitely a leaning towards that Sun Ra style vibe and the other Afrofuturist jazz guys of the past in terms of his obvious influences. I like Flylo but his space jazz hints don't always work. I wasn't a huge fan of a lot of Cosmogramma for examplejesslem wrote:That's just speculation though isn't it?

Did an Edit^
Oh yeah, you should jesslem, captain murphy was a great record and madlib is just so broad, its like he is a living jukebox

Re: The Warp Curse - When good artists go backwards
I've looked him up before, but I know he's got a lot of stuff and I didn't feel crazy about much of it.
Do you have any recommendations?

Re: The Warp Curse - When good artists go backwards
part of it is how vast his catalogue is and how you see different stuff from his perspective...
but the madvillain album is one of my favourite albums + the quasimodo eps maybe?
