Ender's Game (2013)
Put this off for ages because it was my lady's favourite book as a teenager and she didn't want to be disappointed, but we were both quietly impressed with the result. The only complaint I really had was that it could've been half an hour longer... the book makes the training and especially the mind game seem much longer and more grueling, but it was a minor ******. It's definitely a kids movie, but it's kids story after all... they've done a good job.

Prisoners (2013)
Decent, but nothing special. Engaging and occasionally shockingly violent, but didn't grab me as much as anything calling itself a thriller should. Kept waiting for a better twist...

I couldn't get past the first, what, 45 minutes of Ender's Game, I was just bored of the whole thing.
I'm normally a big sci-fi fan though, is there any point in giving it another shot? I really wanted to like it but just couldn't connect at all, it felt sorta cheesy and bland.

I guess being fans of the book helped... if you're not a kid and/or you didn't read the book when you were a kid then it's probably not worth making too much of an effort. There's better sci-fi.Reese Liar wrote:I couldn't get past the first, what, 45 minutes of Ender's Game, I was just bored of the whole thing.

m8 Prisoners was so great. Like the silent shot of the trees when the kids get abducted, that shit's so tense ! Granted it's not Vertigo or Chinatown but it's got some of the greatest moments of last year's cinema. the camera work is astonishing and the writing is smart in its own way because it's more human than a standard thriller, emotions of the characters actually get in the way here and most of the time they are the biggest nuisance
Saw Enemy too. 40 mins in I was wondering if I was watching an hour and a half of pure emptiness then it all started to make sense and the tension of the film kicked in (not unlike Prisoners).

Yeah a genuine thriller which is so rare. Hugh Jackman is amazingly intense in that film.

Gyllenhaal wave out of the blue
Giving both Prisoners and Enemy a go, loved Donnie Darko and Source Code.
