In the latest episode, we set the challenge to Stray. The London-based producer has released music on some of drum’n'bass’s best labels, such as Critical and Exit – who released his most recent 12″, the glassy-eyed Chatterbox EP – but slowed things down to more of a hip-hop pace for Against the Clock.

Re: [VIDEO] Stray makes a track in 10mins
Ya know, my biggest take aways from these type of timed production challenges, are how people can see how a track get's started and evolves to the ending point (is something ever really finished?)....Anyways, it's cool to see that the pad was pretty much how the track started and holds the main vibey element...
....Personally, MY biggest take away was the start of the track...He just wanted to vibe with something real quick....Then I was able to deduce something I've been doing, kinda more subliminally than consciously...If you're able to develop a groove or vibe from few elements in the track, it seems to be more relatable..

I've long been an advocate of starting with a musical element instead of the drums, and this video highlights why perfectly.

Dude was super decisive. He had some nice shit going by like 2 minutes.
Re: [VIDEO] Stray makes a track in 10mins
This is the best one of these I've seen by far. He's well organized and just knows how to vibe instantly.

yea this one is sick, would like to see how he makes those sick dnb tracks, but shit its all good, the pads are nice for sure on this one, just goes to show you can vibe out with just a few decent sounds

Re: [VIDEO] Stray makes a track in 10mins
Yeah, but his dnb/footwork kinda vibe don't intrest me! There are some hints to 90's jungle music I like, but most of it is too clean drum and bass stuff for me! But still, hes got some production talent!andius wrote:Well worth checking out some of his actual productions, here you go:societyloser1 wrote:Never heard of this kid, but it seems like he has a lot of talent.

Re: [VIDEO] Stray makes a track in 10mins
that was as impressive as dj clent building a full tune in like 5 minutes

Guessing you mean this one;bennyfroobs wrote:that was as impressive as dj clent building a full tune in like 5 minutes
Not seen it before, watching now. Very impressive, like how he's giving commentary on what's he's doing
EDIT - He mentioned something about the MPC being setup so that even though he's only working on one pattern, it's capturing the changes he makes as a whole track. Anyone know more details on how it's doing that?

Re: [VIDEO] Stray makes a track in 10mins
Ridiculous stuff, yeah.
Still wondering how he captures the whole track just from a single pattern edit on the MPC though?

Re: [VIDEO] Stray makes a track in 10mins
I don't know much about MPC's but can you use the assignable outputs on individual samples in a pattern? I always assumed you could just use them for individual patterns themselves, but didn't know if you could do individual samples.wub wrote:Ridiculous stuff, yeah.

Re: [VIDEO] Stray makes a track in 10mins
This strikes me as being really really planned.
Re: [VIDEO] Stray makes a track in 10mins
They're allowed to prep samples/patches ahead of time.wolf89 wrote:This strikes me as being really really planned.
So I guess "so-and-so makes an arrangement in 10mins" would be a more accurate title.
Re: [VIDEO] Stray makes a track in 10mins
Yeah this doesn't really seem that interesting. It feels like he's basically made the track before and is just then recreating it again here.
